Two cross bars is all that’s needed. 4 is over kill and not worth the $$$$$$.
I use the roof top box all year round. For one season it stayed on the roof. No issues.

Right on bro. Appreciate the help.

This thread has been super helpful as I've been trying to decide which cargo box to buy. Today I just found a rooftop box website that was super helpful for seeing the relative size of a bunch of different cargo boxes compared to lots of different SUVs, so I thought I'd post it to help out others who might come across this thread.
Toyota Land Cruiser Rooftop Cargo Box

You can mix and match boxes / vehicles. I had a hard time imagining what the various options would look like before this.

Watch Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. There are many used options to chose from. You can't believe how many people buy one for a single vacation, then sell for a big loss even though it is still mint.

So we went with a Yakima carbonite Skybox 16 for our LC

Same here. Carbonite 16. I think we got it on Facebook marketplace or something. Paid a fraction of the what they cost new. And it was literally new. Never was used/mounted. Still had the stickers on it. Like others have said they can be found for a lot less than new.

I have also decided on the Skybox 16 Carbonite, although I had a hard time picking between the Skybox 16 and 18.

I am seriously considering the Skybox 18/21 but am also looking at the Force XL/XXL. Any opinion on the Yakima vs the Thule? I understand the Skybox is not UV protected?

The box would be mounted on the factory LC rails.

I have been scouring the local craigslist type sites, but the nice ones are not much less than new or they get scooped up by the rental people.

Has anyone tried to fit an Oztent RV5 fits inside the box? I imagine it would be a major pain to get it up there and in the box as it weighs 60+ lbs, but it would be nice if it fit. Other option is putting the tent on the cross rails next to the box but I am concerned with the pressure put on the aluminum frame using two support points over rough roads.

Thule Evolution 1600..I think it's discontinued now, but dealers still have stock or have updated of the same.

Fits stock rails - no roof spoiler or shark antenna interference.

Been very good.......

Apologies if that has been answered/posted already. How do you mount that Thule Box to your LC200. Can you use the standard roof rack or do you need the Thule Wing Evo Load Bars for example to attach it? is there any additional hardware you need to mount it to your LC stock roof rack?

I have the Thule force XL. Thule's hardware is super easy to use and clamps down in seconds to the factory cross bars. After looking at the ease of install and removal between Thule and Yakima I went with Thule. Plus I like the looks of the Thule force, A little boxier/rugged appearance.

what seat covers do you have on there?

We're looking to get one of these soon for our 2016. Is the Yakima SkyBox 21 Carbonite overkill for a small family (mom+dad+1 year old)? I was considering the 16 or 18, but came across a great deal on a like-new 21. Figure we could future proof with the likely addition to the family at some point. Typical travel bags plus Christmas presents would probably be the most seen. 200 is used just for family duty.

Also reading some comments around buffeting with the 21 - is that the case? We're typically cruising around 80 on trips.

I’d go with the 21. There would be no appreciable driving dynamic difference to the 21 vs the 16 (other than how much weight you can load). As a sail to be buffeted if it’s windy you’ll feel it with either. Not sure a tester would feel the difference between a 21 and a 16 on a breezy day though. Sounds like more space is net positive for you.

Skybox 21 on a LX. Works but top trunk doesn’t open fully. I have an LC rack waiting to be installed.

Here's the Skybox 16 Carbonite on factory roof rails. It does not interfere with the rear hatch or anything, and even leaves some visibility through the sunroof. I have a family of 5.

Can you open your rear hatch with the 21?

I was looking for a 16 used but found a 21 at a good price. I opened my hatch and measured 92" from the spoiler and it seemed like the box was going to stick out over my windshield though. Seemed like it wouldn't be stable at highway speeds.
