What Roof Cargo Box Fits?

Roof cargo box wasn't enough for the 4 adults and 4 kiddos (w/carseats!#@).

So added in a hitch cargo carrier with waterproof bag for another 15 cu ft for cooler, stroller, cases of water, etc. Forgot to grab pics of it deployed but it worked great. Unlike the roof cargo box, it stays in the slipstream and is easier to access. Stows away nicely after reaching our destination.

we also run short on space with 2 dogs and 2 kids so I picked up one of these I use on the back. Hence my need for an aftermarket bumper with no swing outs as this thing sits on its own swing out.

I've had great luck with our Yakima Sky Box 18!

I have the same box, and it is fantastic. I've run it on a Tundra with cap/rack, 5th Gen 4Runner (hard to lift back gate due to short rack size on 5th gen) 4th Gen 4Runner, and now 200. It has held up amazingly, and keeps my gear dry. I've had suitcases, sports gear (snowboards, skis, etc.), shovels, etc., and most recently a bunch of rubber outdoor sport court tiles. With two dogs and a 4 yr old, I wouldn't be able to go on road trips and get all of our stuff without it. I bought it on Amazon when they had a great sale, but REI tends to be the best bet when they have their big sales.

what kind of hitch carrier si that it looks like a 1upUSA? thanks.

There's lots and lots of types and styles to go with. I have an open carrier as I also use it for various odd size things from Home Depot like tall plants, x'mas tree, BBQ, dryer, tool chest among others things.

I've had a steel carrier before and they rust and are HEAVY. So I specifically looked for an AL one. This one is quite well built for the price. Also paired it with a folding arm (as I didnt find any steel ones I liked that already had the feature), and weather proof bag:

1) Carrier - Amazon.com: Goplus 60" x 22" Aluminum RV 2" Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Truck Luggage Basket 500LBS: Automotive
2) Folding hitch adapter - Amazon.com: Folding Heavy Duty Hitch Adapter: Discount Ramps: Automotive
3) Bag - Amazon.com: Reese Explore 63604 Rainproof Cargo Tray Bag: Automotive

I have an Curtis cargo carrier. 24x60".
It came with a heavy duty bag that is made for the carrier. 2424x60.
It works great for winter driving and when odd shaped gear hauled I fold it up and it does not take a lot of space in the garage. Check them out. Not expensive.

Getting ready for an upcoming trip and strapped my new Thule Evolution roof top box on.

Was very surprised to be able to just fit her in the garage!!! On 33 tires, but AHC proved its versatility again, sneaking just under the garage door.

Apparently I'm going to copy your LX build even when I don't intend to... Ordered 305/55R20 Falken Wildpeaks after seeing your truck and reading your review. Today on my lunch break I picked up a silver Thule Evolution 1600 off craigslist, then on a whim googled it after the fact and see your truck again!

Hah, go for it! I do have the LC rack with 3 cross bars on my LX which gives the box a more forward stable base. But it should still work just fine.

I may have to copy you on the LC rack as well. When I mounted the Thule Evolution 1600 cargo box as far forward as possible the hatch still doesn't have enough clearance to full open, and it's cantilevered so far forward of the front bar that the wind gets under and it gets a WICKED bounce going over 75 MPH, to the point that the buffetting create by the front of the box over the sunroof was giving me a headache. I shifted the weight of my load around inside the box and even removed most of it with no change. I did not have this problem initially so I think it is simply solved by moving the box backwards so it is more centered over the load bars but then it will totally obstruct the rear hatch. Having the full length roof rails and being able to shift the cross bars farther forward should solve both problems. Funny I had never noticed that the LX570 comes with a 2/3 length roof rack until I tried mounting something to it.

Anyone have their stock LC rails they want to part with??

Yeah, I hear you. I knew of the too short to the rear rack from my previous LX470. Whenever I'd mount ski's, the front crossbar was not forward enough to really keep the nose of the ski steady against the wind. The front mount is more critical in this respect. Saving grace was my LX470 didn't have a spoiler. So I was sure going to replace my LX570 rack with a LC rack early on.

Do you mind me asking where you sourced your LC rack? Is it an OEM take off? after-market?

Not at all. Mine is OEM, but from an overseas market. Procured via Ebay. There looks to be aftermarket versions as well so can't vouch for those.

Make sure you take note when uninstalling the stock rack, to untorque and undo both bolts together per mounting point. That is don't take one bolt off completely complete removing the other as the blind nuts behind the unibody are not welded in place. They are only held via a clip and can spin and fall out if not removed with the proper procedure.

Also mounted a Yakima Skybox (16) to the factory cross bars, functions perfectly. No fairing. I manage to fit 2 exped megamat duos, a kodiak canvas 6 person tent, and 2 sleeping bags. The wind noise is negligible. Only tricky part is getting the box up on the roof. I find that it's easiest to toss a heavy blanket over the rear spoiler (and antenna) and slide it up and over (one man job if need be).

Just completed a trip to Telluride, CO with the family and first time with the Thule XL with factory crossbars. No issues, other than some slight movement to the front of the box at 75 mph. Decided to keep it at 70mph for the whole trip. I will be using the roof box more often now since it leaves so much space in the cab and makes for a much more pleasant road trip. Will Thule cross bars eliminate the bounce?

I have not had any bounce. My cross bars as far back and forward as possible. The rear of the box is 1/8 inch from the rear hatch when opened. I have purchased another set of cross bars for a total of 4 to give the box more support. I’ll report back when I finish a road trip.

That's funny you have the same camping setup I do: Kodiac Canvas tent, 2 exped megamat duos. I take it the LandCruiser bars are solid enough for the load? It was WAY too much weight for the LX570 crossbars and they turned into leaf springs and that cargo box started bouncing like crazy on the highway. I purchased some solid aluminum crossbars that clamp onto the rails for the time being. Long term fix will be a roof rack.

I know this is an old quote but do you have the part number for the cross bars? Going to add two more myself with the expectation of mounting a Yakima cargo box as well. Looking to add either the Skybox 16 or 18 carbonite. Cheers! 🤙

Two cross bars is all that’s needed. 4 is over kill and not worth the $$$$$$.
I use the roof top box all year round. For one season it stayed on the roof. No issues.
