I finally got some time to dig into my new to me '94. It had a bit of a funky odor, so I stripped the carpets out. I ordered a vinyl floor liner from Australia.
The stink has exited the building.
Some of the carpet backing stuck to
the sound deadening sheets. I need to decide if I want to go all the way and remove the sound deadening too. I did this to my rally car a couple of decades ago and it came off pretty easily by heating it with a propane torch and scraping. Or I could try to find dry ice and try that way. I do have a bunch of dynamat type sound deadening sheets left over from another project that I could use in its place.
But, in the process, I found two rust surprises at the front and rear of the passenger fender that I need to cut out and weld in a repair. That was a bummer. It was sold to me as "rust free", so I was hoping to get out of rust repair...
Now to see if I can find someone willing to cut patch panels from a rust free donor.
Then it is time to bust out the tools.
The body kinda sucks. A keen observer will also notice that the passenger side doors are a mismatched color. What you can't see is that both fenders appear to have been replaced too. And the quarter panels and sills are beat up. It is a perfect candidate for a 40 body swap (4080), but my wife isn't feeling it... I figure I'll run it on trails for a while, and when the engine blows, it is LS time. Then when the body succumbs to the inevitable rust, it is 40 chassis time.
