What is the Tacoma mod for the antenna?

Grrrrrrr...... JDM 80 series has the antenna on the other side, and there's a hardline in the way of the 'access hole' in the engine bay.

I'm probably going to rip the frigging thing out through the bottom of my fender well and replace with a Tacoma one as described above. Will post pics when done.

All you have to do is Google the old part number listed in my installation write-up in this thread, and you'll get the hits you need for a cross-reference (86309-AA040 - Google Search ! ). But if you go back to the write-up now, I have updated it with the current part #, and some others of possible interest.

The antenna motor on the FZJ80 is controlled by manual buttons on the dash, unless this was bypassed with an aftermarket stereo installation, so in a “bone stock” rig, you shouldn’t be able to “hear your motor run…when you turn of the radio.” A bent or broken retractable mast is an easy fix, but if the white-toothed antenna cable is broken or stripped, then it is kind of big deal to take the whole power unit out, replace this, and put it back.

I can’t figure out why retracting the antenna could be that useful in a parking garages as it only sticks up above the roof rack by a couple of inches? I guess this could be of concern for a 6" lifted rig with no roof rack...

Pretty sure my JDM HDJ81 VX had auto up/down antenna that went up/down when the key or radio were turned on/off and buttons to manually lower it. But I haven't owned that car for 8 years

It can be wired either way depending on head unit. Kind of moot reference to this thread, though.

Currently installing this ProComm Spliter in several rigs. Uses CB antennae for AM/FM. Several local guys are very happy runnin this setup. The Firestick brand of splitter mentioned earlier is NLA. We buy our Firestick goodies direct at the factory here in Phoenix. The 48” Firestick II is the schizzle when mounted on the rear corner.

This broke off after 2 weeks use. Returning the pieces and getting a fixed mast!!!

Which type is "this" that broke? The AA040 that you quote is a fixed mast (old part #). To convert to fixed mast, Tacoma, these are needed:
Antenna Assembly 86300-35090
Antenna Mast 86309-0C020

The silver whip antenna (83609-4020) used to come with the assembly 86300-35090, but seems to have been removed from current stock.

The silver whip antenna part number seems to be missing a letter/number. Do you have that off hand?

Just reading through this thread (again) because I got an update notice...

I am also listening to at least 2-3 AM stations on a regular basis, listen to at least 8 on FM, and am lamenting the fact that my tape player died 3 weeks ago because its the only tape player I have and I just found an old copy of Pink Floyd - The Wall a month ago...

I listen to NPR on the radio. When traveling, I will listen to their podcast however the podcast will stop randomly for buffering when the signal drops. The radio works flawlessly when I am local to the station. I've got a AdvAuto/Autozone whip antenna that has worked great for years. The aluminum base is starting to oxidize and will need to be replaced soon.

Oh yeah, sure I have a part number off-hand that I posted 10 yrs ago! Uh, no. It doesn't matter, though, it's not made anymore and all old parts have been supplanted by the black whip listed above. There are plenty of aftermarket options, if you just have to have silver, like: 1995-1997 Toyota Tacoma Pickup Antenna Mast Parts, 86300-04020, 86309-04020, 86396-16020, 86392-04020, 86300-04040, 86337-04010

Later model FZJ80s have an antenna ECU that controls the antenna motor. The up/down buttons and the radio on/off both signal the ECU. A bone stock FZJ80 can certainly do as described.....not all FZJ80s are the same.
