THIS is salt

Ever have one of those salt lamps and want to lick it?

Btw my frame and tail light guards are black not actually white :meh:

Yup, I remember those days of my truck being white from the salt brine mix when we lived in the People’s Republic of Maryland. I’m sure happy I don’t have to fight that mix anymore.

I did everything I could to avoid driving my 40 in the winter there, to go as far as doing a full frame off rebuild!!

Removed the fender flares... no surprise here!

Funny, I was just going to post up the picture of my daily driver below as to why I’ve done nothing to my land cruiser this week, and lament as to why those of us on the east coast can’t have nice things, but I see you’ve beaten me to it...

Test fit the rack for the fj55, and took her down the driveway to get the mail, no farther. There's salt out there!

Got started on the top cap.
It was covered in old ass carpet headliner leftovers. So I started with 40 grit on a DA sander. That really got the majority of it off.
Then I broke out my grinder with a wire wheel and went to town on the rain gutter. Cleaned up pretty good but definitely some rot going on.
After that I shot it with some red oxide type primer made especially for rust.
Ill get back on it tomorrow and start patching in new metal.
I may try a new method I've been reading about. Using panel bonding adhesives.
Anyhoo, looking forward to getting this last piece of the puzzle finished.

I used to do quite a bit of panel bond repairs on all kinds of body materials at the body shop I worked at. It works great. On my '79 FJ40 I am currently restoring, I use 2 part JB Weld instead of 3M's Panel Bond which you need to buy their special mix gun and the tubes are very expensive. I buy the big tubes and mix them by hand. Awesome for filling holes, glueing in patches, etc. I think it makes a better patch because it seals the repair from moisture as well.

Tell us if they workout good for ya,
They look the same as the ones i bought for my 40
Cheers

I believe these are the lights I have, last night I spent some time adjusting them. I had to adjust them down a lot, the glare from them is pretty strong. Hopefully in the next day or two I’ll be able to get on the road and get a feel for how they are after the adjustments.

Previously I’ve not entirety understood why people would not drive their 40 in the winter... however seeing that picture helps me to understand better. At most we’ll see a week or snow a year... and they usually just shut down the city and wait till it melts. Last year there were only a couple days... and so far none this year. Salt use is minimal as it rarely goes below freezing.

There are *literally* piles of salt on the roads around my house, since we've had so much precipitation locally that the roads are iced over in places they haven't been in prior years.

And, when the roads are dry, there's often a fine dust of salt that comes up off the road when you're driving. Not as much of a problem when it's bone dry, but pretty insidious when it's wet.

That being said, once I get my top and sides back on, and get any bare metal covered up, I'm planning on driving my 40 through the year.

View attachment 1896529 Pulled out my heater to make room for a new old air products A/C. What are these parts worth?

The rear heater cores are now unobtanium, and the hard lines running to the rear often corrode out/burst - Not sure what they’re worth but don’t throw them out!

Definitely will not be trashing anything, want it to go to a good home.
