As I remember it was right the start of the 74 when the secondary safety latch was added. Thinking adding that feature to my 73. On my 68 hood which is not only heavy I glue thick duct liner to the under side. I forget once to hook the latches. At speed I noticed it bouncing. Pulled over and hooked the latches. For how would have to pop open would have probably hit hard enough fold the top into the windshield frame. My 73 obviously had that problem from a PO.

I did learn something today kind of cruiser related. I was going to start a thread on the difference between the 1/79-9/82 theb40 series transmission hump and the 10/82+ transmission humps. Flipped the screen on my phone to get the pictures of how high the inspection cover is from the later style on a 82 tub. I couldn't figure out the background. Finally dawned on me when flipped it takes a mirrored image.

Makes it look like the transfer case shift lever is on the left side. Guess I will hold on that thread.

It’s surprising how many of those Aircraft winches there are floating around. I bought one in ‘92 and have meaning to rewire it and put it back on the truck since ‘96. Last year I decided it was easier just to join the 8274 crowd. If I get a chance I’ll throw it on a receiver on the tail end.

Have not been able to spend much time working on the 40 for a couple months, but I did spend a couple days this weekend and built a rotisserie for the body. Excited to get back to it And make some good progress.

It’s surprising how many of those Aircraft winches there are floating around. I bought one in ‘92 and have meaning to rewire it and put it back on the truck since ‘96. Last year I decided it was easier just to join the 8274 crowd. If I get a chance I’ll throw it on a receiver on the tail end.

Bought this 73 back in 1994. Will replace this winch with a PTO winch. I have heard these were made from military surplus jet engine starter or a landing gear motor. Unless they isolated the ground to have it run both directions starter makes more sense. This one has a phone number on it from the place that made in Phoenix. Little bit I have used it pulled very well.

As a footnote this cruiser was last on the road in 1988. Notice the condition of the cable that is over thirty years old. Just a few weeks ago came across the extension cord with the push button switch. Has a trailer light plug that fit the male half mounted in the dash. Just have to love previous owners.

Not much to see. Adjusted valves, changed spark plugs, and played with timing on Saturday. Sunday tackled body mounts and started straightening some body panels. Two wood wedges between the sill and the frame helped to provide the lift required for removal of old body mounts and install of new. I did have to cut all but 4 of the old mounts out with a sawz-all. Lost some blood in the process....

Landing gear motor is what I heard. Mine ran in both directions but had no free spool. I’ve spooled out a few feet of cable, run it around a pole, and lifted the front of the 40 clear off the ground to change a flat tire. It also dragged a four door Caprice Classic 50 feet across a farmer’s field after it’s drive sunk it down to the belly. Also a 45 cab sitting on about 6-8’ of frame all over the back yard (on battery power alone). I don’t think I even felt it get warm.

I used the same plug, an extension cord, a piece of heater hose, and a single pull double pull self centring switch to make a remote. I was a bit smarter and mounted the plug in the top corner of the front bib… I’ll likely fill in the hole when I repair the bib since the 8274 has it on the front.

A few weeks ago after driving up to the ski hill I found both hood latches were still released from the night before, luckily there wasn't any excitement.

Drove off after a tuna fishing trip and found I'd left $1000+ worth of rods and reels leaning against the car. Got a block and went back. A guy standing there was holding them and said he figured I'd notice pretty soon. Thank Gawd!!!

Got some more time in the shop & chipped away at prep for bodywork and paint.

Got some paint stripper on the underside of a fender to strip way the undercoating that was on there, and worked at straightening out the panel behind the driver's running board. The PO must have hit something just aft of the running board, but with some flat stock and clamps, and a few hits with a hammer, we're back in good shape.

Here is the crude clutch for the drum release.

Is the plaque with manufacturer info.

Really have a lot of power considering these are direct drive not gear reduction.

Mine is definitely gear reduction, and it’s housings are the same. Planetary gear set, beautiful machine work, and all sealed bearings.

Well, the rear main, transmission and transfer case seals were in similar shape so, while I’m in there, this is on the way out.

Got it running!! It's a 84 2F from a 60 and the oil pressure is at 80 psi what do ya think!!
