Finished an engine reseal, de smog and general cleaning. Still need to polish the valve cover and add Holley Sniper.

In a strange reversal of last week’s wheeling trip, I washed the mud off, threw the hubcaps back on and took the Clustertruck to a car show with my father-in-law’s car club.

Pumpkin run is a huge event in south Jersey hosted in an old 1950’s junkyard. Very cool show with a little of everything - from foreign, to domestic, to military, old and new. I was definitely outnumbered by American muscle, but I managed to find a few kindred spirits in the lineup.

That’s almost 600 miles driven in an FJ40 in the last 2 weeks. I’m way more deaf but in no way disappointed!

Sounds like you need better exhaust... no reason for a 40 to be loud... even my 350 is super quiet (carb is the loudest part).

Time to learn to shift without the clutch... that way you can fix it at home.

I do need to learn...I somewhat did this though. I was at a red light and when it turned green the clutch went to the floor. I couldn't figure out how to get in first (partially because I was blocking traffic and panicked) so I jumped out and pushed it thru the intersection and then walked a few blocks to a store and bought some brake fluid...filled the reservoir and pumped a few times and was able to get in in third. Quickly jumped the medium and turned around...fortunately I was able to make it the 3 miles back home without stopping. Then this morning noticed the slave was the culprit, which fortunately was the only part I had. Few hours later she is like new.

But yes...time to learn to shift without the clutch as this time I was lucky.

Shut it off, shift into first. Start in gear. When you reach shift point, let off gas, shift into neutral, let RPM drop 800 rpm and shift into second... basic idea. Then repeat.

Downshift... let RPMs drop as low as comfortable, shift into neutral under neutral throttle. Raise RPMs 800 and shift into lower gear.

Meh, my 40 is quiet exhaust-wise, ain't no quieting down wind noise at 65 top and doors off though.

I'll deal with the hearing loss.

It’s funny because the exhaust from outside the truck is very quiet. It’s really pretty tame/quiet below 50mph. The issue is you literally can’t get anywhere around here without using the (65-70mph) interstates. This puts the truck at 2500-3000 RPM. At this point the engine/exhaust is loud, but it’s really the 100% lack of weather stripping (wind noise/rattling) and 17” rigid (clutchless/non-flex) fan that creates a really loud drone at that speed - not to mention the whine I’ve had in the trans/transfer (input bearing maybe)?

Yanked the 31s and threw on the 33s.
