I was just wondering… Why did you choose the OEM Toyota ignition coils instead of the much less expensive Denso branded ignition coils?

The cheapest I can find the Toyota coils was $73 each, plus shipping. I know rock auto has the Denso coils for $49 and change, each.

I was wondering your strategic motives because, I also have to do this same task at some point in the near future.

If you’ve got a secret strategy, please share.

It must be a subtle flex.

Because I bought them used (50K miles) for considerably less ;)
There's actually nothing wrong with my current coils, but I bought these OEM ones in case I found any with cracks or failed seals.
Mileage on current ones is unknown.

A full set of Denso coils and the good plugs is still roughly $500 from Rock Auto. Better than blowing a plug out though. New plugs at every timing belt, coils at every other.

Has it been found that the Denso coils are just as reliable as the OEM? I’m kinda in the same boat. Mine might still be the original coils at 280k. When I changed the spark plugs a month or so ago I found that the coils had some stress cracks on them and was dreading the day I had to replace. I think it was 3 or 4 that had this cracking

That is not bad. All of my passenger side coils were splitting open right down the mold seam (240K miles/22 years). They were still working good but I replaced with 4 new from Serra Toyota during one of their sales.

yeah I'm pretty sure Denso made the OEM ones and they are identical in build quality and function.

How’s sound? Is the bass sufficient?
My PO installed a JL Audio 8” sub in it’s own enclosure and I get tired of having it take up space in the back.

Bass is good, not great. Definitely will be a downgrade in bass for you coming from a sub enclosure. I listen mostly to hiphop and while it's still lacking on the low end, it's decent enough. I'm replacing the 6.5's in the doors next which will make a much bigger difference.

For me, it was a great upgrade to just get rid of the rattle and restore some clear sound coming from the rear. Not too many speakers can fit in the OEM box, so for $25, a couple hours for install, and not having to deal with a box in the trunk, I'm happy with it.

I recently reworked all the accessory wiring in my rig using an Auxbeam 8 gang switch panel. For mounting, a PowerTray GX/4runner tray works on the passenger side on later models with the charcoal filter mounted in the rear up under the spare tire. Linked below. The wiring Auxbeam provides with the switch panel is able to reach the factory battery terminals with no issues.

I used the essentials mount. I can’t confirm this will work for earlier models with the charcoal canister in the engine bay.

Can confirm that it won't fit the pre 2003 model years due to the charcoal canister.

As for Auxbeam, any conncerns about not using a relay for each of the new circuits?
I used Voswitch because it integrates relays in one single package. Mounted it on the fusebox cover (which isn't great but works for now)

I can’t confirm nor deny fitment for earlier models. Someone will have to test it. If someone is local to LA with a pre 2003, we can meet up and test fitment.

The Auxbeam has solid state relays for each circuit. I did use an aux relay for my lightbar as at 40a it exceeds the Auxbeam max of 30a per circuit.

Out with the old and in with the new one:
