Lubed the zerks, removed sunroof and lubed gasket with silicone spray, new PCV, flushed brake fluid and installed a new D bushing on the passenger side of the steering rack. Still have a noise coming from the steering column inside the cab. Ugh. It's always the little noises that bother me the MOST!

Interesting, a mechanic who works at a garage/gas station I fill up at came out today and asked if I wanted to sell. I politely smiled and said never.

Any difference with the new brake fluid? Mine are getting a bit soft on the first depression.

I've got a very annoying rattle on the steering column as well. If I jiggle the wheel back and forth while stopped it feels like I have a 1/4" of slack/play. It makes a deep knocking sound. It does it over bumps and I can feel the slack in the wheel.

Honestly I haven't felt a difference in the brakes. My pedal is and always has been firm. I did it as PM as it was the only fluid remaining that I hadn't change.

I do believe the steering feels tighter after the D bushing. Your steering wheel noise sounds similar although mine doesn't sound as bad, yet. I believe it's coming from the manual tilt joint but there doesn't seem to be any play that it isn't normal. Hate noises, rattles and clunks. I try reminding myself it's a 14 year old vehicle.

Installed my 11" VisionX Evo Prime LED's with 10w LEDs .Getting it wired up tomorrow.

Put a pair of vice grips on the steering shaft down by the brake pedal. Grab the steering wheel and see if you can feel any rotational play between the wheel and the vice grips. There is a slip joint that will wear and gave me those same symptoms.

Did you replace it or just leave it/learn to live with it?

You may have just solved my problem... I heard/felt this first when landing a jump, I never feel it on the road but a very rocky or washboardy road will do it too. It's really not bad though, but now I have something to look into!

its nice to hear others are trying to hunt down similar noises.. i find my front end knocks like hell over slow speed road imperfections - i.e. driving down a snowpacked street that has potholes in it.. i have repacked and tightened all front hubs, replaced front bearings, installed light racing uca's, new shocks, changed big d bushing on the rack (with oem last year) etc.. the steering doesn't feel sloppy, however, i am pointed back to the steering rack bushing.. i'm pushing 35's for about 10K now, cruiser only has 140K on it - I've convinced myself its the steering rack bushings.. on order are the poly bushings from OBT - i think a firmer bushing mount will allow for better tightening and less distortion of the bushing under the increased loads from the 35's. i seriously hope the bushing kit rids the problem.. and no, its not the sway bar mounts.. i have the noise whether the sway bar is off or on.

This is what I did.... it was BL related for me. Maybe yours too?

I decided to try the TJM lockers in the new thirds I am waiting on being built instead of ARB lockers.

I also ordered 10 mm and 5 mm OME trim packers and an 80 series OEM locker switch.

As cool as that is(and it is cool) I like the Elvis sunglasses on the dashboard better..

Stan! THANK YOU! I stopped following the bl thread after I installed yet. I hope this is all it is. I have to lower ball joints coming and the super pro bushings, they can sit in the drawer if this solves the problem. Seriously we'll done and thanks for posting the fix with great photos.

I found this http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=161689 and bet it would address the prob some but not all of us are having. Sound as if then Taco and 4Runner guys see it all the time. Heck the dash disassembly even looks like a 100.

That's the same info I used to diagnose my steering rattle, although I used this procedure to simply the disassembly and reassembly:

I ended up buying a new steering shaft from Toyota, although alot of the Tacoma guys end up welding or pinning the slip joint.

Give me details on audio quality for phone calls...receiver end too. In spend half my life in my truck and need a quality hands free kit so my wife and I can make calls while in our truck together (headset in this case is not an option) Noise canceling mic?

Great post, thanks. The Tacoma folks have this problem along with the 4Runner crowd and Tundra too. When I have time I'll research the steering shaft part #, I won't be surprised if its used across the product line certain years.
