I bought a bunch of MTRs when the discontinued them in 22 I think it was. This was the last set of 5 new ones I had squirreled away. Been in a heated shop out of sun. So felt fine when I mounted them up a few months ago. Got these on 3 trucks still. But probably in a couple years they will all be phased out.

Finally got to installing onboard air on the Taco way more of a challenge than I expected but that’s always part of the fun id be lying if I said
I wasn’t jumping for joy like a little girl when the wiring worked on the first try can’t wait to give it a proper trail test

Second time's the charm, the first order of aluminum tubing is still lost in the USPS office in Billings. A long 45º bend was the last piece of the puzzle for my intake piping, it arrived today so this evening I finished welding up the intake. Just need to add some mounting tabs and a bead on one end.

I need an adult!

I was certain that my oil leak was coming from somewhere near the back of the driver's side head. Head gasket looked fine. There's a port circled in red that I don't know the function of, but it is juuust outside the seal. I can probably pull the plug there and reseal? There are two holes circled in orange that appear to access the flywheel? There's a matching set on the opposite side of the block.

The distributor gasket came apart when I removed it. Is it possible that this is all from a bad gasket there? This all started after I replaced a leaking intake gasket.

Google says the plugged hole in red is alternate threaded port for oil pressure sensor. It has a hex head? Looks like a ratchet or socket extension fits the square top. Threaded in?
Seal that sucker up.

Oil from the distributor gasket could definitely contribute to oil all over the back of the engine.

My Dad always gooped the living cr@p out of the intake to block interface with RTV. Are you sure you got that sealed up last time? This article highlights some tips.
Hemmings - SBC oil leak tips and tricks
sounds like he answered the problem since it started after he replaced the gasket. most of my sbc leaks were valve cover gaskets. very poor design but once sealed they work. looks like you'll be ready for the run

I got it all put back together today. I looked closely at the seal surfaces before cleaning them up. It looks like the seal between the bottom of the intake manifold and the block (the "china walls") never sealed properly. There was no squish in the silicone there. So I did a better job of reassembly (I Hope) and, with luck, that'll be the end of that oil leak. I did get new head gaskets, new head bolts, new exhaust manifold gaskets, a new oil pressure sender, and a new dipstick tube (because I broke the old one off with the exhaust manifold).

I set the valve lash to where I could just rotate the pushrods with my fingers, plus one half turn. If there's a better way to do that, I'm all ears.

And it's not running because the timing is off, but I'm tired and I'll finish that another day. I need to refill the cooling system once it can idle and open the thermostat. Then it'll need an oil change as there is definitely coolant in the oil. I'm 3d printing a compression stroke whistle at this very moment to make getting the timing set properly a bit easier. I'm really bad at getting the timing set. It's trial and error, but mostly error. Maybe I'll have time to wrap it up tomorrow.

I got the timing set and she's a runner again. No leaks. Not bad sounds from the valvetrain. There was lots of white smoke, probably from all the coolant that got spilled everywhere during disassembly. It was 80% cleared up after 20 minutes at idle while I refilled the coolant and got all the bubbles out. I need to take it for a 30 minute drive with some acceleration to get everything warm and then I need to do an oil change while the oil is mixed up. Then it should be good again.

Side note:

I 3d printed this tool yesterday. What a game changer! It makes it SO easy to find #1 TDC. If you work solo, you need one of these.

Took it out for a drive to get it hot and mix up the oil. The timing needs some adjustment. Not a huge deal. The oil change though... Yikes.

I'll need to do another oil change to get all the contaminated oil out. I'm glad I drove it before the change to make sure it was in solution, but it sure made it look bad!
