I've gone back and fourth so many times on 285's vs 315's. My brain says 285's but man 315's look so good. Our camper is only about 1500 pounds, the 80 towed it surprisingly well! I didn't ever really notice it behind me. With it "loaded down" the cruiser finally leveled out and looked great. Unloaded J springs give some serious rake haha

Thanks for all the input from everyone here. This forum is priceless for 80 ownership!

Give it a few years. Your brain will be saying stick to 315's but man 37's look so good 🤣

I need a new exhaust bad, considering going this route and building my own. did you buy as a kit? which muffler is that? hows the sound?
No kit just a bunch of parts from Summit. Muffler is a Dynomax ultra flo with another glass pack on the rear tailpipe. Sounds great to me, not loud but a low mellow tone no drone anywhere. I only used about 18" of the straight pipe so you wouldn't need 2 of the 45" straight sticks. I would also order one more hanger. I'm waiting for it to arrive to put on the very end of the tailpipe.

I have the rest of the 1fz to play with.

Cyl #6 head gasket victim. It sat for several years after that so it’s hard to say what is salvageable. Head is being rebuilt by myself. As for the block🤷‍♂️.

I would recommend having all four bolts support that engine block hanging on that stand. I'm surprised it's staying there with only two. Sure would be a shame to break the bell housing flange on the block.

Took my cruiser out on its first camping trip this weekend. I bought this thing about 6 months ago and after some maintenance on it, I'm finally starting to enjoy it.

Didn't feel comfortable going out too far, previous owner put "the cheapest 35's I could find" on and I don't have a spare tire yet. I still have a ton of work to do on this thing, but I needed to get it in the woods.

PO put OME J springs front and rear, and don't have any aftermarket weight installed so it's rattling our fillings out at the moment. So other than the extremely stiff ride, I'm really looking forwards to getting this thing dialed in. My wife is slowly warming up to it. My previous adventure vehicle was a V8 4th gen 4Runner and she loved it more than I did honestly. She's not a fan of 10.4 MPG and the "slow and steady" mindset.

Next up is more preventative maintenance, softer springs, and name brand 35 inch all terrains. (Fingers crossed tire prices go down soon)

Looks great, I am in need of a spare wheel/tire as well as my HDJ81 didn’t come with a spare. Not doing anything “serious” until a spare wheel and tire are in/on the vehicle. 😁 I have a good buddy in the Knoxville area and travel down quite often. Wind rock park looks awesome but not until I have a spare. I will PM you if I head down there if you want to have a meet and greet. Good luck with all of the PM, I am at that point as well.

I agree, I need to modify the brackets as they are not long enough🤦‍♂️.

I removed as much as I can to lighten the load.

But thanks for the reminder, I’m gonna put an axle stand under till then🍻

As I had removed radiators, fan, turbo, an batteries from the engine bay, I went on new engine mounts.

As I didn't want to lift the engin from the main pulley nor the oil pan, I managed to support it just in between.

As the Injection Pump was still in place, the top bolt of the LHS mount was unaccessible.

So I removed the 2 lower bolts. Then in lifted the engine just 2 or 3 cm, enough for the mounts to be slightly above the chassis brackets.
Then, from underneath I patiently removed the 4 bolts of the RHS bracket. Took the bracket + mount away. Removed the old mount. Sanded and repainted the bracket. Added a new mount (ref 12361-17040) and reinstalled the set with the 4 bolts.

Then I moved to the RHS and did the same. Even if it was more tight, it when ok with a bit of patience and the right spanners.

All in all, it's been a little frightening before and during the swap, but everything went fine.

Stripped!

Crank is clean, nothing a polish won’t clean up.

But going to have to bore! #6 piston is not coming out till I can get a ridge reamer.

Such low miles.....Envious👍
Thanks! At this point I am committed to driving an 80 series till the end, so I spread the mileage between 3, this one sits between a 60k rig that I drive very little and my 140k daily driver.

Having a company car helped tremendously over the years.
