There were four 80s in one spot today in Cedar Rapids. I don’t think this has ever happened before! Two were mine, one was @Dudleyfj40 and the fourth was some dude I didn’t get to talk to. Weird!

I know in some parts of the country this is an every day thing but not here.
Ive never seen another fj fzj80 here in ma.

Replaced the rear brake pads and added a little white lithium grease to the lug nuts.
Didn't bother to bleed the system. Maybe I'll do the front sometime this weekend.

How long did it take? I got to do the same just the weather here hasnt been helpful.

Im not done yet, just got everything off so far...got a late start...will finish it up tomorrow ;)

Make sure before you start this job to clean all grease off front of engine...

Oil pump cover and crank seal takes about 3-4 HRs. But I pulled the radiator and flushed my coolant system at the same time. Gives you more room and you don’t have to worry about messing up radiator fins or breaking the nipple on top.

At one time I had half of the 80s in town. (3 of 6). Now there are at least 10 that I know of. Counting the fourth today and another one Brent is going to buy.

Scored a used Plano tactical gun box off the local FB Buy/Sell/Trade. $20. Used once. These things are pretty nice. Not Pelican nice but not Pelican money either.

Put in the upgraded 6K headlight bulbs, low and high beams. Both harness clips are cracked on one corner (how does that happen?) so I filled them with a bunch of bulb grease. Pass side was intermittently working and then not, seemed like a bad ground. It has worked now since I put in the new bulbs.

Oil change and filter (5k interval). Happily uneventful with no leaks after. Just Pennzoil 5w30 High Mileage for the cold winter months. While under the truck I noticed yet more PO crap repairs.

I was losing some trans fluid and now I know why. Who fixes things like this? Notice the factory clamp on the right? It's not holding anything, just on the hose. I was able to tighten down the clamps 2/3 rotation on each clamp. I will leave it like this till spring when I swap out much of the cooling system.

Back of the transmission case was covered in a film of oil. Think I located the source.

Back of the valve cover appears to be leaking. Sweet :bang:

Also noticed a shady coolant hose right under the temp mix valve.

My aftermarket hood (it didn't have holes for the washer fluid jets) didn't seat all the way down where it should in front. It was raised on the front corners maybe 1/4" above the fender lines. When I passed trucks or caught a strong crosswind the front corners of the hood would rock and flex. It was VERY unsettling and looked like the hood was coming up. Reached a frustration point with it and took a BFH to the support and had to backspace the latch a bit too, but finally got it to sit flush now.

Finally, cleaned out the latte catch can. Not too much blow-by for ~5k miles.

Reward for maintenance completed. Thanks to Joey for the simple write up on the oil change.

It got super warm here yesterday .. 62*F ... the frozen Susquehanna River was a fog machine. No poser shot, too many people near the ramp snapping photos for me to hop the truck on the rocks.

I won the battle and the war. Swapped out the OG alternator. 25 years and 349k miles. Pro tip: on the 93-94 plan on removing the top radiator hose. The brakes lines are in the way. I had new hoses on hand so I went ahead and swapped them. Didn’t flush the coolant. Just drained and refilled. Got it all buttoned up and remembered I had a new heater control valve and hoses to swap. Ugh. In the spring. When it isn’t 5F.

She was tired. I use Duralast alternators instead of OEM Remans. I have had two failures of OEM Remans dead out of the box in the past. AutoZone bench tests them to make sure they are working.

Took the new ice shelter out. Night ice fishing with my son as a reward for my 3.5 hr fight to swap the alternator.

Nothing big yet. Just some little bluegills. About 6”.

@LS1FJ40 Were they Denso reman's that failed?! I was planning on swapping my alternator soon as preventative maintenance (plus it makes noise and is caked with old salty mud).

Are ice shelters heated? Temp difference?

3fe in a 91. New to me. 146k white, Was at the shop this week and replaced diff fluids, valve cover gasket, adjusted valves, exhaust and intake manifold gaskets, radiator, hoses, thermo, cap, and more. Next week driveline gets checked for the clunk when shifted to reverse, and tune up. Power steering pump from dealer is 600 bucks, that is going to wait a bit, just a slow leak. ordered all oem tune up parts -

I believe so. Ordered from the Toyota dealership. I know of a couple of other guys that had dead out of the box ones from as well.

I generally always use OEM but there is Something to be said for being able to see hem bench test the alternator in front of you.

Yep. Heated. Small propane heater. And the shelter is insulated. It gets too hot in here and we shut off the heater for a little bit. It’s about 55F inside. Had to ditch the parkas. It’s 2F outside. It’s quite pleasant.

If we are staying out for a full day we can fish in jeans and sweatshirts.

Took shelter in my 80 today after getting a text from emergency services that missiles were about rain down on us here in Hawaii!

Glad it was just a false alarm. Didn’t take long for memes to show up. I say too soon, but this one is kinda funny!
