What did you do to your pig today?

So what is the etiquette here on posting for my own rig?
Do I:
a) Keep posting in "Wdydtypt" or
b) Start a "build" thread of my own? This would be slow going at best...

The boy and I got the piggy running yesterday!!!! I plugged all of the vacuum lines I could find and it runs! It doesn't accel very well, but that is likely an adjustment... I think :meh:

The brakes pump up, but I don't like them at all. We did just a slow trip around the block. All of my neighbors were amazed to see us driving it.... after a few years being stationary..

ouch, unfortunately, common problem. pigs notoriously rip out their lower hinge areas. if you notice your door dropping when you open it, start investigating. you can usually see the cracks right around the hinges (if you can get the door open ;) )

Three weeks, five states, over 3,000 miles! Everywhere from Joshua Tree to Crested Butte. Thank God for late model F150 seats and an overdrive. Only glitch was needing to replace one tire we watched go flat from a sidewall split just as I exited the driver door after 400+ interstate highway and LA freeway miles. Seems like things are screwed together pretty well...can't ask for much more from a 40-year-old rig that's a real "Frankencruiser."

Wow thats a beautiful pig! I aspire to make mine that clean looking.

n personal note, I need to fix my throttle body cable as it decided to snap while merging onto the interstate. Made it fun driving home through the snow drifts with out having control of the throttle.

Anything you would change, fix, etc. We are going to be traveling with the 71 and your 3000 mile shake down run is a good opportunity to see what works and what doesn't.

Rattles, heat from firewall, etc.

As mentioned, swapping out the bench seat for late model F150 captains chairs was perhaps the best recent mod. Can't imagine having done our trip on my old bench, even with the three layers of additional foam I'd added under the Specter cover. Every thing but the roof (which has other insulation at the recommendation of the shop that installed my headliner) is covered with Quiet Crap, similar to Dynamat but much cheaper. That includes floor, firewall, doors and cargo area/tailgate. Still tough to hear a pretty good stereo/amp combo at speed. Kinda nice to cruise with the rest of the traffic on the Interstate at 75-80 mph thanks to the Ranger, which is noisy at low speeds but seems to quiet down remarkably (or hit a pitch my aging ears can't pick up) around 65mph. My experience is that it doesn't do much for mileage, but undoubtedly extends engine life. I think lower rpms also contribute to the fact we have had absolutely no cooling problems using a refurbished stock radiator with no shroud yet, high volume water pump and heavy duty fan clutch that locks up more. Wouldn't go that fast without solid steering and brakes and without having upgraded the suspension (spring packs disassembled/lubed, Add-a-Leafs and shackles and new spring and shackle bushings) and Pro-Comp 9000 shocks.
All that and more is the product of 2 1/2 years and 12,000 miles worth of fiddling after the initial body swap and paint/body work.
Probably the main factor is that my focus was to economically build a daily driver capable of hunting/fishing/camping and light-medium off-roading, not aggressive wheeling/crawling. I've spent about five decades learning how to avoid the stuff the crawlers do for sport and still am able to get most everywhere I want to go, including taking a bone stock '83 Suburban on 235x15s up Elephant Hill, helping rescue a Nissan pickup along the way. Not a criticism, I've been known to be pretty aggressive on the racetrack in the 914-6, just a different wheeling perspective.
Appreciate all the compliments...couldn't have done this without all of you on Mud, your experiences, information and parts.

I'm trying to source parts for a disc swap. Not real interested in taking it on the street without brakes I have confidence in. Will try to get the drums adjusted this weekend... Anyone one in NoCo have a spare mini axle?

Awesome! sounds like thimgs cam together very nicely. Hope I get to see your Pig at the RS rally...
 
Found an '83 donor axle for knuckles, birfs, rotors, calipers and hubs.... I have my work cut out for me this weekend....

Are you just transplanting the knuckles?
That '83 third member would be 3.77:1 and I'm not sure what you have in the rear.

Just knuckles out...Will try to get everything disassembled and cleaned up this weekend. Finding an axle or knuckles to hubs was a chore. I could buy a whole axle for $400 or just the knuckles out for $385 from most places in Denver I called...

Good. The other issue would be overall width of the housing.
You will get the big knuckle pattern and 60 rotors and calipers, but are TREs different?

Believe there is some mod needed. I'll burn that bridge when I get to it. I have the tie rod, but missing the relay rod. May have to have something fab'd up to get it to match. Also will need to change length of tie rod, from what I've read...

The '79-85 mini truck does not have the vented rotors, but I have a path to get there... :hillbilly:
