On Saturday, I spoke to nearest Meineke about replacing a rusted section of exhaust flex pipe. Made appointment for this morning.
Around 2pm I got an email saying my vehicle needed substantial work.
Somehow (perhaps by Bluetooth?) they claimed to know that the truck was past due on fluid replacement according to Toyota’s Service schedule.
At the bottom there were photos of my rusty flex pipe. The AI bot or email person suggested that I have that section replaced.
I called and was told to await a call back from the right guy in 10 minutes.
After an hour I called back and was put on hold.
At the end I was told they cannot replace the flex pipe because it is not a Toyota exhaust and the flex pipe is currently in a dangerous location.
I can’t get a ride to retrieve it until tomorrow which means I have lost a handful of days when I could have sourced a flex pipe section and bodged it in place myself.
I never would have gone to them at all except no one in the area had that particular size pipe in stock. Meineke said they had the flex pipe but could not just sell it to me.
My vacation plans being buggered by nitwits.

Still contemplating whether I should bring a diesel-heater to Iceland in July / August, as the two of us will be in a ground tent. @Marrimus any advice?

I've had good experience using a 12v heated mattress pad under my sleeping bag (powered by my bluetti) when the temps dip down. My diesel heater hasn't made any trips *yet*. It does add more complexity and weight...?

I will be traveling with a friend from the UK. No group; we organized this ourself. It's a bucket list item to see Iceland
in my own Cruiser.- We will meet in Hamburg July-16, do a bit of sightseeing there, predominantly I want to visit tallship PEKING, which was moored in New York City for a long time and now got refurbished in Hamburg,
- then making our way trough Denmark
July 19/20, one of the few spots in Europe you can legally do some beach driving (sort of). - Ferry to Seyðisfjörður in Iceland departs from Hirtshals on July 21.
- 3 weeks in Iceland . Plan is to do a lot of F-roads. Those mountain roads legally require 4x4. Some are quite challenging i.p. due to remoteness, unpredictable wearher and water crossings. Areas we plan to travel are around Myrdalsjökul, Langisjor, Maelifell, Kerlingarfjöll, see the West Fjords, Aksja, Stuðlagil. (F208, F232, F210, F261, F26, F338, F88, F910..), Solar Eclips in Seyðisfjörður, as we'll depart by ferry next day Aug -13.
- Stopover in Färöer islands
, back in Hirtshalts Aug-19. - Historic motorcycle race on Rømø beach in Denmark Aug-21
- Home in Germany around August 25.

Every time I tried to get a garden going, the wildlife destroyed it near harvest -
Tried nets, small fence (terrace?)... don't matter.

So the Land cruiser gods smiled upon me this evening.
Sort of.
I was adjusting my steering wheel clock positioning from under the truck when I happened to look up at my harmonic balancer. For some reason I poked at the AC pulley (balancer number 2) and it moved! I reached up and with one hand I was able to slide it off the nose of the harmonic balancer. In a few days I'm heading south to Montana and had this come off on the road, you can just imagine what kind of carnage would have ensued. The pulley had completely separated from the rubber underneath and must have been spinning freely, although I still had AC as late as yesterday.
Good grief.
Maybe it's because today was my birthday, or maybe just good cruiser karma? Either way, I've resigned myself to not having AC on this trip. A small inconvenience compared to what could have been?
(The new part is ordered)

Surprisingly good so far. My wife planted lots of Marigolds in with the veggies -supposedly deer hate it, and put some wind chimes next to the beds. We have had lots of problems in the past, mostly with the deer.

We are going to the XOverland ranch for the Big Thing (near Bozeman). If you are going to be there I'd love to clink a beer! We don't have a lot of time to get there (heading down Wed night, camping on the way and then the event starts Thurs).

Imagine it could do a bit of damage at speed.

Replaced the front door checks and pins on the 77 over the weekend. Tried this stuff on the interior panels while I had them off. Hardener hardened pretty damn good. I'll do it to the rest as I take them off. I'm no wood worker (or metal worker... or worker) But seems like a good preventive measure, right?
