Intake arms look nasty. Lack of valuable adjustment early in life. Too bad the arms are discontinued. I’m hoping there is enough material for machine shop to clean up.

i think there is plenty of meat on those rockers. My machine shop zero issues with mine and I had quite a few that looked like that.
Btw: what’s the details on the intercooler setup? Where did you get that? I’m looking at a setup as well, and turning my boost/fuel up more as well.

Were you noticing symptoms of these cracks? Or you just knew it was happening based on age and propensity?

The engine decreased in power over time (even with turning the boost and fuel up a bit), ran rougher, developed top end sounds even after valve adjustment.

Age was an issue as well... it's a 35 year old powerplant. I don't care what anyone says, at 35 years old, any engine needs work done to it.

Oh absolutely. That said, that's not my ideal option.

Luckily, I sat and thought about the arm situation and then had my "aha" moment.... 3B's were put into Toyota forklifts.... Off I go and pull out the conversion book:

And the rocker arms indeed crossed over:

So, called my Toyota Forklift dealer and the parts guy said these were good numbers. I asked if he could see national inventory and he unfortunately said he didn't have access to that. Bummer. So, I went ahead and ordered 4 of each. No harm in not trying. We'll see in a week or so if the arms are indeed available in Toyota Forklift format.

Chased the head bolt holes in the block: M12 x1.25

Then took a wire wheel and did an initial cleaning of the block surface. Overall, pretty decent. No ridges or pitting that caught my finger nails which is a good thing.

I'll be going over it again once I get some decking tools. I'll be addressing the cylinder liners and the piston tops once I get my Flex-Hone in hand later this week. The cylinder bore size is about 101mm (about 4"). So, just waiting on the tooling to cleaning the fire ridges and the sleeves.

those seem like good indicators.

the tough part for me at least is figuring our what sounds are “normal” for these old diesels. Every video I hear they all seem more clackey than mine, but mines completely rebuilt and valves in spec.
maybe that’s how they sound new?

I still dont even have a power gauge yet either as I’ve never drive a 4cyl diesel Toyota, or bj74 and my last Toyota diesel was an HJ45

There’s like zero comparison to check with as opposed to my TDI Jetta where I can a million videos on them

Hey Onur, you are rebuilding your engine I see!! Are you doing a partial with motor in the truck? Why not just pull the whole thing out to make things easier. Honestly, I want to pull my engine and do it again! Sounds crazy but I think the second go around could yield a better result. I'd take the head and the block to the machine shop and do a proper, take my time kind of a rebuild. My engine shows no sign of weakness other than smoking under load and a bit of an oil pressure issue at startup, but other than that, runs like a top. Biggest issue is sourcing a rebuild kit nowadays, since you are no longer in the business....

Well, the real bad news is evident now.... Cracked pistons. All 4 have cracks. Not the best timing for this..... Everything else I have sitting on my shelf. Pistons, rings, etc. Not so much.
