Ended up ordering this short block, once it comes in Im going to swap all the do-dads over from the old one. That seemed like the quickest way to get the back on the road. Ill probably run into a slew of things that need to be ordered and replaced in the process.

Wondering if anyones ever gone this route and if they know of some general parts that will probably need to be replaced?
So far im expecting:
-More than likely an oil pan gasket
-Plastic clips (replace ones Ive broken in this process, and just get rid of the pain in the ass design of some of them for something easier to work on)
-Vacuum tubes and any other soft lines
-Any hardware thats in rough shape
-Any gaskets that didnt come in any of the kits Ive got

Also going to get ahold of an EGT kit and install that in the exhaust manifold.
Any other supporting mods that would benefit the longevity and reliability would be appreciated too.

Pray for me fellas! 🤣

Are you planning to push higher turbo pressure with your rebuild? If yes, you might want to consider ARP head studs.

You are basically gonna have a new engine in that thing. That's awesome!

I saw this post about EGTs on the 1KZ. If you didn't have a gauge EGT might have had something to do with your issues? I'm not a diesel guy though...

Keep posing pictures. Thats a hell of a project and good for you for tackling it!

I have an engine hoist if you need it. Make sure you install your EGT probe pre-turbo.

While trying to remove my rear diff plug (front also) the plug guard was a little mangled. Took a grinder to it to remove because I couldn’t get a socket on drain plug and hadn’t switched out to low pro Allen head plugs yet. Still working on repairing that.

Since I had to fix this I just removed the whole thing. While out, I’m taking care of some much needed surface rust elimination. Drove it hard and put it up wet last winter after all the snow/ice storms did a toll on the undercarriage.

Went ahead and replaced my starter as well. After the WV trip it was acting up. You can see the bolt I broke off when I rebuilt the starter 4 years ago. Pretty sure the water and mud crossings let some moisture in.

A hammer and chisel normally work well to get the drain plug out, you can also use it to chisel out the area near the bolt head so you can get a socket on it. Either way, I am glad you go it out.

That probably would have worked. I will say, it was awkward because the diff was low to the ground at the time and the ring guard for the plug was tight to the plug. The diff had a date with some new parts so cutting it off seemed to be the quickest way at the time.

My springs showed up today. I have them on the shocks but still need to paint the mounts. I also added some resevoir mounts and the limit strap tabs. I also heated and twisted the pitman arm to reduce bind at full droop.. sorry buy no pics of that yet as it is buried in sand to cool for the night.

Well crap. Back to the drawing board. What does you magic 8 ball say????

Broke out my inter-cartortionist and swapped out my extremely worn throttle cable for a new OEM unit. Relatively simple task, but you better be ready to wedge your body into some awkward positions under the dash. Last summer I had an issue with high idle whenever the temps and humidity were high. Didn’t matter temp of the engine, just outside weather. It went away this past winter and then popped back up again recently as temps have been rising. Turns out the damn throttle was sticking and not allowing the throttle body to fully close when you let off the pedal. Thanks to Mud I learned this is a common issue when these throttle cables start to degrade….they start getting sticky when the temps and humidity are high. All good now.

How long do you think this took you? I have a cable sitting here and been afraid to tackle it because of unknown time.

Maybe an hour to do. The most time spent deep under the dash with a headlamp trying to figure out how to get both hands up there to line up the bolts holes when reinstalling the cable bracket thingamajiggy.

Out with the useless cup holder and in with the Dirtchurch pitcairn mount for a bunch of Bulletproof goodies. I’ve got a few more toys on the way they hopefully make it on the truck before Relic Run as well…

I have the mic and ‘longer’ range unit antenna….contemplating adding one of those Aussie-style stubby fiberglass spring mount antennas to the front bull bar for quick- connect wired longer range capabilities when on the trail solo

I always recommend to my buddies running a hard mount gmrs in vehicle and then having the handheld for out of vehicle or at camp communication
