I just bought my winch and at its peak it is 220 amps or so. I assume OEM is 40 amps? My batterys are a 1000 amps each which I will wire up of course paralell . I can say a higher output alt is in order.....correct? What are you guys using Mean Green....GM what?

:D Thank you

OEM alternator for the 22RE is 60 amps.

Your batteries may be rated at 1000 amp-HOURS, not amps. There's no way a battery can pump out 1000 amps, it would melt.

I've heard really good things about this guy: Mr. Alternator - high output, powder coating, chrome starters & high torque starters. I have talked to him on the phone, seems to know what he's talking about. I also would like to up my charging system, I will go with one of his units if I do. But be careful, if you ever intend to take advantage of all this current, you will also need to upgrade the charge wiring (thick white wire) that goes to the battery.

I dont have a RE....carbed ......oh christ I said that wromg....yea HANDLE 1000 amps hours. Thank you I will check out the link;)

When I had my 93 22RE out for rebuild I swapped an new 120 amp GM alternator. It's not hard on the engine stand but a pain when it's in the truck. It rocks. It runs my winch at full load at 1500 RPM..

If you ever choose to use a GM style alternator do NOT use a "One wire" Take the extra 2 mins to wire it up properly. Pirate and Mud \ Yota should had writeups still.

I wouldn't be concerned with your batteries going out while winching. I only say this because ive seen countless old ass cruisers and mini trucks use their winches all day long without ever seeing a problem with charging. I have seen a hell of a lot of winches overheat and fry themselves tho. I would be worried about that above anything else.

But a high output alternators are super neato so im not saying you shouldn't do it just that I don't think that the problem your stating is a little irrelevant.

I went with a Delco CS-130, 105 amps dead stock out of the box.

I put a 90amp unit off a Supra on my 22re. Not a huge increase but 50% more couldn't hurt and they are dirt cheap at junk yards.

I'm assuming it wasn't a direct bolt-in application? Or?

Ive been running the painless dual kit with dual yellow top's for year's with the 8274 and a 9500hs with no problem's as far as charging.I think the stock unit's last awhile and take some abuse. I checked on the mean green unit's but they were about $600.00. I can go thru a couple stocker's for that.I drug my az about 75' in a pond on my side till I could set up on all four's out of 5' of water then up a 12' bank till this set up finally died.dried every thing out and still going today.. HTH Kenny BTW thank's for the pic's of the set up ntsqd was wondering how hard it would be to do that bracket!

When I had the 22re I used my Premeir Power welder as well. When I switched to the 4.3 it bolted up, I ran a winch, Hella off-road lights, gps, Laptop all sorts of stuff and never had a problem. It is a 160 amp unit. Call Pat or Jan at Premier and they can set you up with what you need.

I've always run a group 27 battery and a stock alternator. Never had a problem, even when winching for 30-40 minutes straight.

Also, almost every 8000-9000 lb winch draws between 375 and 450 amps, not 220.

120 amp GM Alternator out of 1989 Caprice Clasic with a blue and white paint job. The red and blue lights had been removed from the roof.

Stay away from some of the smaller bodied high output GM alternators found on Caddies etc.

Amps are needed more for lights (constant) etc. than winching (intermitent load)
