I was under the impression a roof top tent is a thing one could buy
But have you really thought about a roof top tent?
In all seriousness, it may be easier to graft a hard shell RTT to the roof of the 80 than it would be to do something from scratch. The biggest issues I can think of would be both water ingress and wind noise along the seam where the top and bottom meet, and getting them to line up. Using an RTT would guarantee that the top and bottom would mate cleanly and tightly. For what all's involved and at stake, I'd say $13k to allow someone to do the work AND assume responsibility for it being done right is a pretty damn good deal.
Ok.... everyone: I am not the OP. I brought this thread back to life out of curiosity. I am considering options for my HZJ75 Troopy.

I have made a poormans Campteq but with wife and 2 kids am going a different direction.. It works as is but needs 1 vw bracket fixed(cracked). It is based on a fiberglass camper shell that I cut to follow the contours of the 80 roof( that took hours!!). Then aluminum lid with plywood under for regidity and to mount the early vw camper van hinges to. The canvas is ok but should get new vw one as screen was shot so I rigged up one for Rubicon this year. Has led light inside. Asking $1000 with awning. No I have not weighed it but prob 130-45 range? I forget it's up...

I was surfing Craigs List and came across a camper shell converted to a vw pop top for $400... I went to look at it and it looked perfect for the 80 and light 100-110 lbs... I bought it and took it home and removed windows etc. I cut the sides off then slowly removed some more to fit the contour lines on top.. Here are some pics. Next week or so my buddy is machining some billet spacers for the confer bases I had that have provisions for a awning..
