I was surfing Craigs List and came across a camper shell converted to a vw pop top for $400... I went to look at it and it looked perfect for the 80 and light 100-110 lbs... I bought it and took it home and removed windows etc. I cut the sides off then slowly removed some more to fit the contour lines on top.. Here are some pics. Next week or so my buddy is machining some billet spacers for the confer bases I had that have provisions for a awning..

Nice DIY job.
You going to cut part of the roof off? Scary, no doubt...
if so, this for headspace or sleeping loft?

Been thinking about this same thing for mine. Only hangup is it will no longer fit in my garage.

Very long time friend of mine and is always in to help us locals with good ideas and invaluable help.. I am not going to cut the roof... My 5 and 8 year old are going to sleep in the tent and wifey and I on my platform down below.. Dog will choose a spot most likely with the kiddos...

An 80 with an upstairs apartment! How awesome is that!

Nice looking job, too, it looks almost factory. Two thumbs up!

I'm liking the Studebaker wind deflector on the box truck.......

It is a friend of mines compound and you are correct about a great place.. You can basically make anything and he is a brilliant fabricator, machinist and friend.. Going to mill the mounts (he is going to teach me) for the top on Sat...
