Were the factory steel rims.....

Thanks for all the responses. I just ordered some cans of the Valspar Massey Ferguson Gray that others here have said is a dead-on match. Here's a pic that someone else posted here on MUD with the number:

So, it seems they came with gray faces, but with the rest black. Do you figure it is satin black or semi gloss?

Are the jump seats and roll bar supposed to be the same color as the wheels? If so, the Massey Ferguson isn't really all that close at all.

I had mine blasted and powdercoated. The stock gray has a little blue in it. DuPont Concrete Grey powdercoat is a match. No, they won't be black on the inside if you do this. Man, I thought I was picky about "stock." :hhmm:

Greenpiece - Sometimes I'm overly picky about "stock" and sometimes I'm not.....really no rhyme or reason to it. I guess we like what we like! Go figure.....:meh:

Splangy - Well, on my '76, the roll bar and the jump seat frames are black. I don't know off-hand about the backs of the seats, but I thought they were pewter like the gauge cluster, glove box, front bumper, etc?

Got all four scuffed and primered:

Now, I'm shooting the backs and sides semi-gloss black:

Of course, now they look pretty much like they did when they came in the mail! The Massey Ferguson Gray (for the wheel faces) will be in on Wednesday. I'll post pics of the finished product....

I checked mine. Gray outside, black inside.

Here's my rig with the factory wheels in white (BTW, they are black on the sides and backs):

Two of them have date stamps of 2/80 and the other two are stamped 12/79. They came off a 1/78 truck that my dad bought used from a Toyota dealership. Like I said earlier, I like the way it ties the white roof cap and bezel together (but I still prefer the stock gray).

Just got the Massey Fergusson Gray spray paint yesterday ($8.49 per can....ouch). I'll be spraying over the next few days and will post up the finished product....

Two down, two to go:

First impression is that it looks darker than the stock color, but I haven't had them outside in the sun or compared them side-by-side to any of my other rims yet......we'll see.

Massey fergusen is browner than the stock color and lacks enough blue. I had some paint matched at my local paint shop tonight. It was the only true match I was able to obtain (after blowing a bunch of $$$ on other paints that were supposed to match!). It cost me a fortune but it's good stuff and it matches!

When you rattle-can paint your rims, how does the paint on the edge of the rim hold up under the action of that bar that the tire shop uses to force the tire bead onto the rim?

I have never seen what happens; I just imagine that the paint in that area would get peeled right back off.

Rigger - I've been wondering the same. I'm letting the rims cure as long as I can before I get them mounted....I'll check for what cruiserbrett says - that there's something non-metallic between the spoon and the rim. I'lll keep you posted......

I had a couple minor scratches when my came back from mounting and balancing. I toughed them up with spare paint and a model brush. Done deal. That's the beauty of paint that's sold at HD.

So, I took one of my completed rims out to the yard to compare to some other stock steelies on another truck.

This one is more weathered and faded:

The second one is almost spot-on.....less weathered and faded:

Compared to the first one, there's definitely not enough blue in it. I wonder what some rubbing compound would do if used on this one to get through the layers of oxidation....

The second one is pretty darned close....maybe just a touch less blue and/or a touch more brown. Honestly, it's close enough for me (and I'm pretty picky). :meh:

So, overall, I'm calling it good. What do you guys think?

most tire shops have the nylon block but most of them don't like using it because it usually pops off and goes inside the tire while they are mounting it to the rim

a good tire machine has a nylon block on the end of the spoon used to pop the bead over the rim...

Finally got the tires mounted and balanced (31x10.5x15 BFG AT's) on the rims. It was about 20 degrees outside last night, but I was determined to get this project done. Here's the finished project:

Here they are on the truck:

And here they are this morning complete with hub caps:

HELPFUL HINTS, should you get new steel rims:

Before priming and painting, take a pair of pliers and slightly bend the hubcap clips back so they don't touch the rim (about 1/8-1/4 inch). This is for two reasons:

1) To get the portion of the rim underneath the clip painted,

2) The clips are so tight that it is nearly impossible to get the hubcaps on (I bunged up the paint with several attempts before I bent the clips slightly with the pliers.....lesson learned).

cruiserstuff-------rig looks great with new wheels and tires, really like the old school look............good job
