Just saw this on a Venezuela 80 Series classified ad.

2006 model with 78k km for sale.

What interests me is the distributor has been changed. Any one know if this can be done here and what the equivalent would be. Also look at the second alternator. Pretty sweet!!

What you're looking at is a triple coil ignition 1FZ-FE, the owner of the truck kept his 1FZ, which originally had a distributor ignition, and replaced it with the ignition system from a 70 series.

The 80 series was never produced with this layout, it was only seen in the 70 series from 2002 to 2009 I believe, when the 1GR took over.

The advantage is a tiny gain in power and you'll never have to deal with a wet distributor, so you can call it "waterproof".

Its not a difficult swap, you just need to find the complete ignition system from a late model 70 series and swap it. Since you never had the 70 series, and you still can't import the later ones, it will be hard to find. I suggest you look for scrapped 70s or 1fz's in Australia, Africa, the Middle East or South America. It might be a tough search, but if you find it, I dont think you can have trouble shipping it to the states..

The second alternator is fairly common, some people install it to power ridiculous sound systems, others to power a complete secondary electrical system with every single accessory connected to it. I think this might be the latter, as this guy doesn't have his cargo area filled with speakers..

I saw the listing for this vehicle, very well built.

Cheers,

Luis

The later ones came distributorless, from the factory.

Thanks Luis for your reply,

What about sourcing the parts in Venezuela and shipping it to Colombia?? It would be easier for me to get the parts to the US via Colombia..

The whole intake looks different from my '93 1fz.

1) It also looks liker there isn't a MAF sensor on the filter box.
2) Throttle body is way smaller
3) Upper intake runner is way different

Any insight on this?

This has come up a couple times but I don't recall anybody actually retrofitting a coil ignition system from a more recent 80 into one of our later models. Its seems like this would be a worthwhile change/upgrade, especially those who experience water crossings and mud holes often. I've experienced a bogged down vehicle due to a wet distributor and it was quite an annoyance.
I'm looking forward to hearing more about this if anybody has any input!

Richard

There's MORE involved than just changing the distributor...

ECU is different, harness too I bet.
Crank sensor

In Oz the 105 series with the 1fz also came with the coil pack.

Just search for 1fzfe coil pack (or similar) to find threads in oz from various folk wondering about converting to coil pack.

I personally would think that you may as well invest in breathers to the existing distributor and some waterproofing at the IAC/TPS connectors or just go diesel :)

cheers,
george.

I've discussed with many folks here and abroad about converting to the DI version of the 1FZ-FE.

The parts list was daunting and the price tag was absurd even by my own standards (someone who is ok paying $300 for FJ60 mudflaps and rationalizing it).

The best course of action was a half cut of said iteration. Transplant everything.

Good luck getting parts. None of the EFI/ignition/ECU/sensors are available in the NA market.

Which later ones? I assure you, 80 series all the way up to 2007 came with the distributor ignition. I'm not sure about an FZJ100 as we didn't have them down here but it makes sense that they have the coil pack version.

Sourcing parts from Venezuela might be tricky, because whenever a whole Toyota engines or 70s come up for parts sales everything sells like hot cakes. If you do find one I don't think you'd have trouble sending parts to Colombia. Didn't you get the 70s in this variation over there??

As it has been mentioned, there is more than meets the eye. You need a complete ECU and wiring, plus all the electrical hardware. Im not sure about the sensors, though. The whole intake is the one from the 70 series, from the airbox to the manifold. The head is the same.

Cheers,

Luis

I bet they swap the hole engine ... actually everything needed from rolled ( or stolen FZJ71 )

My buddies 2006 is, came that way from the factory, in Venezuela.

A few people have done these conversions, but they're not factory made.

I have a 2005 80, three of my closest friends have 2007 80's. My dad used to have a 2007 and i have seen more than my share of late model 80s. Matter of fact, I see them on a daily basis. The 80's didn't come with the triple coil ignition system.

Replacing the entire engine is a PITA because you can't legally have a different engine serial number other than the one that originally came from the factory. So if you change the whole engine, you end up having trouble on heavy security checkpoints and such. So its easier to swap everything you need leaving at least the original engine block
