It's not a Unicorn, but a nice low mile UZJ100 with dealer installed TRD supercharger. P

Adult owned, well maintained and never hooned. Zero Rust. This Land Cruiser was set up by an acquaintances father to tow a travel trailer, thus the Supercharger and air bag assisted rear suspension. Sadly that dream was interrupted by a life event, so this low miles Land Cruiser never got on the open road to follow the dream.

Super clean dealer installed TRD supercharger. Drives like normal V-8 until you put your foot into it and then pulls like a wild beast.

Original post on this is here: For Sale - Supercharged UJZ 100. What's it worth?

trd-left-front-jpg.1408509

Exterior is not perfect, but this vehicle gets regular complements. Right front fender repaint due to being hit by a deer. When viewed in bright light at the correct angle you can see the Pearl paint is not an exact match. Note: This photo was taken to highlight this issue, under casual observation or looking direct on the side it's not at all noticeable.

trd-drivers-seat-jpg.1408508

Seats show very little wear, perhaps even less than other lower mile Cruisers.

MORE PHOTOS are here: https://goo.gl/photos/ToEtwPLQT9fXZob36

Original Invoice $50,226

I'm the third owner, first and second owner were father and son. CarFax shows three previous owners, but the vehicle has always been in the family, it was just briefly resisted in California and then back to Washington. Included maintenance records prove this.

Interior is a 9.5/10 and includes, super nice defect free leather seating including the 3rd row seats.

Vehicle is equipped with ALL bells and whistles, except NAV, but who wants a 17 year old Nav system anyway. Dash is unmolested and sports the original 6 disk changer.

Low miles less than 105,000

TRD Supercharger, dealer installed and beautiful with all decals etc. Original intake manifold and all stock intake brackets, hoses, pulleys, belts and odds and ends are boxed and included with sale. Looks really nice, keep it or sell the kit on ebay.

Asking Price: $18,468. Probably could ask more, but spring is coming and this is how much I need to buy a used tractor for my small farm.

This Cruiser is generating lots of interest, so bring your best offer and be prepared to back it up with earnest money. Please contact me if you are a cash buyer and ready to close. If you require financing, please work that out with your bank and be pre-approved prior to contacting me.

How to view the Land Cruiser. Happy to post more photo and video, let me know what you want to see.

Vehicle is located in Friday Harbor, WA a beautiful tourist destination if you never been.

Driving:
1:45 minutes from Seatac international. Then catch Washington State Vehicle/Passenger Ferry at Anacortes Terminal bound for Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. Ferries run many times a day round trip costs about $50 for a vehicle and driver.

Pre-Qualified purchasers can avoid the ferry as, I can meet them on the mainland in Anacortes, WA.

Flying:
It's an amazing 30-40 minute sightseeing seaplane flight from Seattle to Friday Harbor.
Prospective buyers can also fly to Seatac International and then onward to Friday Harbor on a Kenmore Air Seaplane Seattle Seaplane Flights & Scenic Flight Tours for about $130 or a wheeled plane for a little less. You can also fly from Bellingham, WA to Friday Harbor on San Juan Airlines - You're There! for about $50 to $90. Vehicle is located less than 5 minutes walking from Friday Harbor Seaplane dock 15 minutes walking from Airport.

Shipping:
For an additional handling Fee of $300, I drop off the vehicle at location of the buyers choosing within 100 miles of 98250, this gets vehicle to Seattle. Given my proximity to Seattle and Bellingham, WA the vehicle could easily go to Alaska or anywhere in the lower 48. Drop-off would only occur once an approved payment method has cleared my bank and settled. Shipping arrangements and costs to be borne by the purchaser.

This 2000 Landcrusier with TRD supercharger also includes original intake, brackets, vacuum lines, thermostat , belt and misc parts as seen in the below link.

These photos also show under carriage, air suspension and more focus on dented running boards and ding on right rear bumper. Let me know if you want any particular photos or video. Thanks for looking.

I do not want to bad mouth anyone if I can help it but anyone who is interested in this vehicle needs to do their homework. I talked with the seller yesterday and he explained some issues the vehicle had when he found it a very short time ago. After hearing this, I tracked down one of the shops that had recently worked on some electrical issues with this vehicle. It is in a small town so it was not difficult to find them. After hearing the back story, the shop was kind enough to contact the previous owner and he called me. (This is the guy who got it from his father who was the original owner.) This previous owner explained in much more detail what had been going on and that it had been at several shops trying to correct the issues. Some of what the previous owner told me matched up with what the current owner shared with me. Not everything did though. One of the major differences was the condition of the supercharger. The previous owner informed me that the supercharger needs to be rebuilt due to the bearings are wearing out in it among some other things. The current owner did not tell me this even after I had made an offer in the 16,000 - 17,000 range, which I made subject to a mechanical inspection. The previous owner also told me the amount he sold it to the current owner for. I don't mind someone getting a good deal on a vehicle and even trying to make some money by selling it after owning it for less than a week. I do mind when they are greedy and try to make a LOT MORE than what they paid and don't disclose known problems to a potential buyer. Just do your homework and be informed.

So the current seller has owned it for about a week? Is he a dealer?

Hey Chad (MT Man),

After our lengthily conversation yesterday, I wish you would have called me to compete your homework, before bashing me here on mud. N

As we discussed yesterday at great length, I was happy to drop the Cruiser at the mechanic of you choice. To clarify, I provided you the name of the repair shop 'Finish Line Auto Repair' here in Friday Harbor and noted they had been the most recent ones to work on the vehicle and would be the best to give you an evaluation despite their lack of ability to find a simple bad connection on the TRD supercharger computer. I'm glad you called them.

The previous owner was not much of a mechanic, so seems hasty to rely on his assessment of bearing or anything else mechanical when doing ones due diligence. Don't we all agree it's best to use a real mechanic and not a frustrated previous owner who spent untold thousands trying to find the fault that had been plaguing him for years.

Troubleshooting the problem did take many hours googling and several days of tracing out every wire in the wiring harness. My time is not free and by finding the problem that at least 6 other shops couldn't find doesn't make me greedy, it shows my persistance and a bit of luck.

I paid a fair price considering I was rolling the dice on this vehicle on the merits of it's low miles and superb condition. I had no idea if I'd ever sort out the problem, but I spent 30 plus pain staking hours tracing wires and found a smoking gun.. a broken wire. FIXED It and now this Cruiser is working great. I put over 100 miles on since my repair and all is good.

Yep, I'm flipping it as I need a tractor for my farm. Figured youall out in Montana would at least appreciate not everyone has the luxury of owning multiple Cruisers, some of us have to work and bust our ass everyday trying to make it work.

Any other perspective buyers, call me... Happy to share all I know and share the name and number of the local repair shop, even the previous owner. This is not Craigslist. Happy to provide pictures or video. Bearings in supercharger are just fine.

Thanks for looking.

Now that MT Man has poisoned the deal...

Price is now $16,500 for MUD Members.

Planting season is just around the corner and I need the cash for a 'new to me' tractor.

Thanks.

For real buyers, here is what you need to know. This cruiser is in great condition. Verify it by getting a pre-purchase mechanical inspection, everything else is just conjuncture.

After reviewing a stack of repair invoices, it's clear the previous owner, Glen was the sort that had his oil changed at the dealership and regularly made dubious repair decision like replacing ALL the coil packs changed TWICE in less than 6 months, etc... he was desperately trying to fix the Cruiser and bouncing it around to different shops and spilling tons of money. I think 'MTman' in his unfriendly post above overstepped common courtesy by a long way and posted information of dubious value as he interpreted it from the previous owner Glen.
Glen may have very well thought a squeaky belt was a supercharger problem, he was grasping at straws trying to find the fault in the cruiser. But, please 'MTman' step up and make a real offer or stand clear. Enough of your Nancy Drew detective work from afar. Seems a strange turn of events as just 24 hours before 'MTman' and I had a nice 30 minute chat and had agreed to touch base the next day to discuss next steps on his offer. I guess someone pissed in his coffee the next morning or he like to use some heavy handed negotiation tactics bashing me here on MUD. Either way not too cool from my perspective. I need to sell this Cruiser so, I can buy a tractor. It's a good vehicle in very good repair.

For context. Previous owner of this 2000 Landcruiser is named Glen, he inherited this cruiser from his father. When I met Glen a few weeks ago he was pulling into the local repair shop 'Finish Line Auto Repair' here in Friday Harbor. I was literately waking by with my wife and I complemented Glen on the cruiser, he stated to complain about error codes and a intermittent check engine light and stall out. The cruiser looked really good, so I asked how many miles (104K). Glen told me he was planning on trading-in the Cruiser to a dealer in Seattle. Seriously, who trades-in a TRD supercharged Cruiser with low miles. Obviously not an enthusiast nor a savvy car person. I gave him my number.

About a week later he called telling me he was ready to sell. We met up at the repair shop as it never left the parking lot, the Cruiser would crank start and die. Glen is a nice guy, but not very mechanical, he said if we just waited a few minutes it would start and run. Glen had all sorts of ideas on why it wouldn't run on this occasion, but kept assuring me it was a great vehicle. Obliviously, really wanting to sell to me as I later found out the local shop had offered $2000 and now he was offer the Cruiser to me for $9000.

We took out time and tried to start the Crusier, it was cold outside and the battery was weak, eventually the battery refused any more start attempts. I had enough and walked away... Later the same day Glen called me again, telling me the Cruiser was running and could I please meet up? Clearly he wanted out of this deal so I said ok, but it would need to be for less than the previous offer.

I told him I wasn't really interested, but he insisted the cruiser was fine would never die on the freeway and would only stall occasionally, so I decided to go have another look. We took a 2-3 mile test drive and spent half of the time stalled on the side of the road, stalled three times in three miles. However, the test drive assured me that mechanically the cruiser was fine, it just had some intermittent electrical problem. At the time I was thinking fuel pump.

We closed the deal and I drove a few miles to my buddies shop or at least almost to his shop as I stalled out about 1/4 mile short and left me waiting for a tow.

I was planning on having our 'off island' mechanic who visits every few weekends take a look. You see we like on a small island, so not too many choices. If one of the two local shops can't fix it, you vehicle either gets towed off-island, a 1 hour ferry ride each way and very expensive tow bill, or in my case a special visiting mechanic would take a look at my buddies shop. I would have to wait a few days as the mechanic wasn't due for a while, so I spent a day under the hood looking and checking things out. After really digging I found two (2) cracked vacuum hoses that were hidden and hard to reach, just the sort of thing that could cause a lean out stall. I took it for a test drive and got exactly 1.1 miles before I stalled and could not restart. Called my buddy and got a tow back to the shop.

At this point, I had thoughts of having my mechanic install the original manifold and returning the vehicle back to bone stock. I was thinking I could sell the supercharger on ebay and maybe recover a bit of my investment.

Discourage, and still waiting for my mechanic, I dove into Google and ih8mud looking for possible solutions. I've been a long time MUD reader, a huge thanks to everyone out there for all the great contributions.

However, nothing I could find seemed to fit perfectly. Next, I reviewed all the prior repair invoices noting dates, mileage, error codes and corrective actions, making copious notes for my mechanic. Frankly the there was no rhyme or reason to the fault codes. Since Glen had just replaced the primary computer, MAF, Coil packs (twice), I figured it had to be wiring or the TRD supercharger computer.

Still waiting for my mechanic, I started with the MAF wiring, measuring resistance in each wire and pulled and cleaned every connector on the vehicle I could find. Note: The connectors throughout the vehicle are clean and all wiring looks really nice, it was hard to imagine how there could be a fault when everything I was looking at was so pristine. I pulled the glove box in this process to access the massive number of wires that run to the computers.

Remember, this was a dealer installed TRD super charger, the additional TRD supercharger computer is jammed in next to the main computer. Glen had mentioned a new computer for the cruiser and this is where I confirmed it, seeing a re-manufactured unit (for some reason I did not get this service record from Glen only the verbal).

Right away I noticed a sketchy splice where you join an extra wire to a continuous one the wire was leading to the TRD supercharger computer. See picture below.

.
905595_primary_450px.jpg

It seemed to be connected at first glance, so I spent a few more days checking wiring, systematically eliminating possibility after possibility. Initially, I was convinced it was wiring running to the MAF or fuel pump or cam position sensor or anti theft system or a long list of other possible items... Finding every wire and connection to be in perfect condition I was getting really worried that I was going to be screwed on this vehicle. My 'off island' mechanic was showing up soon and I was not looking forward to him spending an entire weekend checking the wires I'd just checked.

I was buttoning things back up and reinstalling the computers, I took another look at this splice with the crappy connection above, touched it and it fell apart. The wire inside was broke or at least fell out when I touched it. This is a wire connecting the TRD supercharger computer to the main computer. Seemed like a smoking gun so I used a used a heat shrink connector to repair the splice and put everything back together.

The cruiser fired right up and I took it for a test drive. It ran perfect and stopped throwing codes. I put about 100 miles on it the next few days. This is pretty hard to do on a small island, but I wanted to be sure it was fixed. At this point my mechanic buddy showed up and we talked about the problem and he looks, listens and takes it for a test drive. He says it's all good. Nice work he says. Another buddy went for a ride as well and at one point we stopped and got out of the vehicle. I left it running and he marveled at how quiet the engine was, he didn't initially realize it was still running. Not exactly what you expect if there was any problem with a high speed bearing on the supercharger.

I then drove it to the original shop here on the island to gloat a bit. I was planning to flip the cruiser as I need the cash for a tractor. I also wanted to chat with them about doing a buyers pre-purchase inspection as I know it's hard for buyers to get out to the island. They had spent so much time under the hood, it seemed natural. The mechanics all came out and were curious to check it out the repair. No one made any mention of supercharger bearings, despite they had been working on it often. It did have a squeaky belt when I first drove it, but it was also below freezing, so a squeaky belt on a cold engine on a vehicle that has not been driven frequently is not unheard of. It no longer squeaks as I drive it daily.

If you want real mechanical advice the old saying holds true. You get what you pay for, so use a professional for you pre-purchase mechanical inspection.

More than enough said, thanks for your interest. Let me know if you have questions.

As the supercharger is dealer installed, was it installed when new (i.e., so the supercharger also has 100K+ miles on it)? When did the issues that you solved start showing up? (the pics of the airbags don't look like a particularly fresh install, and the backstory would indicate that all of this was done together... but having my own dad die from cancer, I know it could have been a more recent install by milage and then the vehicle sat collecting the dust). Also, is there any explanation about the body damage beyond the deer? I've purchased other vehicles from elderly owners and what looked like minor damage turned into complete suspension rebuilds as the particular vehicle was driven over and down a median.

I've spent most of today reading threads about superchargers here on Mud... I'm not an expert (not yet an expert on LCs in general either). I've been looking at mostly '06-'07 LCs for the extra power of the VVTI, but the supercharger can (more than) make up for that, so I'm somewhat interested in the vehicle... I'd call you, but others may be interested in the answers to the questions I'm asking as well...

Working on determine when the supercharger was installed. Did NOT get paperwork from previous owner on Supercharger. I do however have the box it came in and planning on using trackIMG number or call the dealer. See photo from supercharger box below.

According to my research, CEL and stalling issues surfaced shortly after 90K service. Other that, I don't have any back story to share and my bridge to previous owner got torched by MTman. I guess you could ask MTman... if you want to hear second hand whatever previous owner has to say...sorry wish I could help. This whole MUD post just got really weird when Nancy Drew started to tell me my supercharger was broken from Montana. That was BS.

Car drives really nice, brakes nice and show no bigger issues or repair evidence than a simple deer dent. I can do some video of the under body, fender well, etc. Looks just like a fender repaint to me. As previously note paint is not perfect.

Supercharger is really nice. Puts a smile on your face.

Let me know.

Thanks Dave

Don't give up on the MUD community, or let one post poison the sale. I do think it helped the overall backstory on the truck though. My independent opinion is that yes, us buyers are looking for bargains, and are scared to get burned, so I completely understand MT Man's concern, and I am quite thankful of his sharing of what was relayed to him. But, as you mention it's all hearsay and opinion. But, he can't exactly just pop over and check things out for himself. And it's increasingly hard to just take a shop's word for the condition of the vehicle, as your own experience on this truck shows as the shops missed root cause issues and cost the previous owner a presumably fair amount of cash and frustration. But since remote buyers like MT Man and myself just have to go by what we are told and can figure out before we invest $$ in traveling we have to take things under consideration, and also take them with a grain of salt.
You have done a great job in answering the questions and concerns after MT Man raised them. And I think it's perfectly reasonable for you to make a profit on taking a vehicle that presumably the dealership the PO was going to trade it in to didn't want to touch, a complicated and rare setup on what was essentially a non-functioning vehicle. And you took it and made it a functioning and valuable vehicle. You had an opportunity drop into you lap. You took a risk, and invested time and effort. Great job! You should be rewarded for that.
As a buyer looking to not get burned, and looking for enough of a bargain to say "that's the one that makes me pull the trigger" my questions are what is the milage on the SC because all the things I read today says they should be rebuilt at 100k miles, so if it was dealer installed when the LC was (fairly?) new, it will need the SC to be rebuilt soon even if it isn't the source of the noise as the PO thought. Rebuild is NOT the cost of sourcing a unit, and getting the install figured out, etc. But does effect value if there is a looming maintenance item.
And while the super low overall mileage is a huge plus, the dents and scratches in the bumpers and running boards plus the mis-matched paint on the fender puts the truck in the "fair" category, imo (with the adjust up from there for the low mileage and the SC, even if it turns out to need a rebuild, its still valuable). The mis-matched fender is something I would likely have to get re-sprayed. Even if minor, it bugs me. May not bug others. I've made body shops repaint fenders and bumpers on my own cars after they told me the car was done and ready for pickup (also a deer strike).
Sorry, this reply was meant to encourage you and balance the tone between you and MT Man, but now I've ended up sharing my own personal opinions and hangups/concerns. Anyways, GLWS, and once you figure out some more details on the age of the SC, I'll figure out if I will be giving you a call and making an offer, which will reflect MY opinions on the above and what matters to ME as a (potential) purchaser.

Sounds good. All very legit concerns. Very reasoned, would love to work with you.
Since original intake is included and complete to nuts, bolts and belts, seems a SC rebuild when needed would not be a big issue or disruption. After MTman comments, I was so concerned I missed something I had three different very competent car nut buddies take a listen...With a stephascope none the less. Nothing wrong with the SC. Sounds good and drives like a champ. Getting lots of offers as I now have it in CL as well. Thanks for restoring sanity to this thread.

Thanks.
