Hey guys, I've locked down a cheap 8274. Date code is CS8. It has a plastic socket, but the PO says the box was replaced at some point. Are there any other ways for me to tell if it's a 78 or 88? Serial number is 98801.

Does it have a T handle or knob for the freespool?

Picked up my 8274 this weekend. Does this look like a March '78 that someone swapped the plug to plastic?
Also, could anyone tell me the gauge and length of wire for the power and ground to their winch? I'll have to get some to test this thing and see what I have.

78' cover with newer plug ;)

just found this thread and I'm curious about it. What does it tell if it has a T handle vs knob?

T-handle is later than the older round knob. Believe that it started with the "8274-50" 50th anniversary model, but I'm not sure.

Ok, i believe all of mine are knob style. I know I have one with the metal socket and round knob. I’m going to check in the morning on what I have. Thanks for letting me know.

You're welcome; no sweat. You probably know that the metal controller socket makes that one pre-1980.

i’m trying to figure mine out as well. the sticker is different than most i’m seeing. i also bought a replacement sticker for my restoration but it’s different that what’s on it. any suggestions? is the case stamped under a peel away section of the sticker?

Is that the new sticker sitting on there? There should be stamping on the flat part. This is te one on my Jeep, but yours should look similar unless it was contract built and rebranded.

peel the little rectangular part out. There should be something under there. I don't even think that's the right series of decal for yours. Post a pic of the socket on the solenoid housing.

nothing under there. i did t peel the full sticker off but i may now and use my replacement from @SMG to freshen it up. it looks more like this one

any chance it’s a replacement?

That decal is not for your winch. Yours is the earlier 4 pin like both mine are. Pull the whole thing off, I'd bet you'll find some numbers. I'd almost bet that it will end up being a Jeep Special Equipment version. Those ones have the serial numbers in a slightly different location.

BTW, if it is a Jeep version, I have a couple of the correct decals for it somewhere.

cool. i’d take you up on that! i’d like to keep it as original as possible from point and sticker point of view

it’ll make it easier to bead blast if i don’t have to try avoiding the sticker too!

The date code should be stamped on the lower part of the flat space of the top case, just like the photo that @MoGas posted.

Your old-style original solenoid cover with the four-pin metal controller socket makes it pre-1980 at least.

i figured it was pre 80 because of that. i’ve just never seen this sticker before so trying to figure out what it is. the jeep special equiptment ones seem to have that on the sticker so i’m not sure that this belongs to that family. it’s clearly a 8274 sticker but from where?

So, I did some digging. and that decal is for models sold in Europe, hence the CE and the Kilogram rating being first.
