mmw68,

As someone who basically uses AC non stop, (I just prefer it cold), how has the Vintage Air unit held up? I have been debating between the Vintage Air unit vs Nostalgic Air (I prefer the looks on the Nostalgic Air, and like that it doesn't seem to take up leg room for the passenger side). My FJ40 is a daily driver, and I would like to know your thoughts.

I dont know if it is a concern with the VA unit, but I have a CCOT system and the condensor looks the same. The other night I noticed that the TOYOTA front grill emblems studs were hitting the condensor. I took a hacksaw blade and was able to remove some extra stud for clearance. Thank goodness it only bent some fins and didn't cause a leak. It is a tight fit up there.

The Vintage Air system comes with plastic spacers to install in between the Toyota emblem and the grill to prevent this issue.

I've also been looking into this unit not just for ac but mostly to try to find something that heats the cab better than the factory unit. Has anyone used one of these units in a colder region and how's the heat output on it

Hi @mmw68, I know this is an older posting but was wondering two things..... 1) Where did you get the compartment to put in place of the radio? And 2) I'm am in the process of trying to figure out how to change the Vintage Air knobs. Just like you I hate the blank ones. Do you know if the stock knobs will fit on the Vintage Air Cables if I cut the original knobs off with a Dremel Tool like you did? I found a company that will make the custom knobs but they use the stock knob specs. They are only able to customize the words. Any help you can offer would be great. Thanks for your time.

PS... Side question, does your knob for the defrost come out really far when you pull it or is it the same distance as the rest?

I am interested in getting a Vintage Air system to install in my ‘75 FJ40. What is the going rate for fellow TX Mudders? Thank you.

It’s been one long hot summer and I’m thinking I’ll need to get an AC unit in my rig before next summer. Any new updates to these VA units?

@MMW, my A/C under dash unit is missing the 2 right rectangled vents. Any chance you can get or have any broken returns that might have some?

Hi all. I am in the early stages of a full FJ40 frame off rebuild and will be using a 3FE from a 1992 FJ80. I don't need AC now, but know at some point will be moving to a warmer climate, so considering doing it while I am building, so can more easily make adjustments as necessary. 3FE is currently mid rebuild, as is the truck. I have the stock AC compressor.

What would it take to build my truck with AC? Will it require lots of modifications? I assume I can use the compressor, but as I understand might not fit under the PS pump where it goes in the FJ80 (battery tray in the way?). Will I likely run into the same fan issues? What else should I know? Or are these too broad of questions? :)

Thanks.

Here's a few pics of the compressor mount on a 3FE.
