This is kind of an offshoot from my other post "Any advice... Putting in new rings"
I wanted to start a new post for folks searching for valve stem seals. At least half of my seals are not sitting on the head where they should be. I moved them down with a screwdriver but I can't see why they would stay. The seals are black rubber with a spring band around the top. I have terrible Blue smoke and presume this is why. I can't see in there hardly at all. Is there some kind of ridge that holds the seal to the head? I have never seen this happen to a motor before. Any experiences with this would be great. I will want to order new seals first thing Monday, I read something about Fel-pro. Searched and could no find for the fj40. Pics of a head without a spring would be great. Thanks

Ask for Felpro Posi-Lock seals........

A drive-on fit @ the guide & spring compressor seal @ the stem....

I can get you the part# tomorrow when I return to work if needed..........

Beck/Arnley also carries a knock-off version.........

Mine out of a felpro kit were the same, but all the umbrella seals do is.....act like a umbrella. they will move some but they do work. When my 79 was smoking I tore it down put new rings and bearings in and came to find out it was a cracked valve seat. in one cylinder.Felt stupid for doing the whloe engine , but man did it run sweet after it was all done.

After calling all the local part stores I came up with Fel-pro SS27504. These have a metal housing where it slides onto the head. This should help keep them in place. No stock local. I was quoted $21 in 3 days. Some on the Net for mucho more. I will show results. Going to do this with the head on using the cord in cylinder method with a uni-strut valve spring compressor. Thanks all... I learned alot here.

Got my seals. Pic shows one sitting on box. Nice metal top hat with a Viton(good stuff) spring seal. Felpro product 27504. Good directions on how to install without damage. Don't compress the valve spring too far or the seal could be damaged. Obviously, gently tap them on with a socket/tubing snug without smacking the seal or valve stem.

Unrelated, but nice Weim! I'm the proud owner of both, a Weim and a 40, too!

Thanks Splangy. Ruby is her name and she loves to ride in the 40. Also loves to chase footballs and catch them in the air. Basically loves to do anything I am doing. If she could type on a keyboard she'd be right here with me. Great breed, though a little rambunctious. Ruby would be our third weimaraner and we've loved them all.

I ran a test last night on the smoken FJ. No more smoke!. The way this thread started was a rig smoking really bad 2 minutes after starting. I pulled the valve cover and found that some of the valve stem seals were not seated down on the head. Life got in the way so I haven't replaced the seals yet but I did pop the valve cover and reseat the seals back down with a screw driver. Started it up and no smoke.
Ya,ya...That was months ago. I can't even believe how slow I am.
Hope this helps someone.

Fjforty,

Now this just will not do !!! I was hoping for a 10 page "how to" with many pictures and a final ....."IT WORKED"......just kidding. Glad re-seating them worked for you. I've got my new seals laying in the garage and when I pull the valve cover I'll try your fix first. I'm still getting some smoke, but it does seem to have slowed down the more miles I put on my cruiser.
