Don't blame you on the supercharger, it's an expensive mod even without considering the fuel costs. My 2UZ-FE runs quite well with headers, an exhaust, CAI, tune, upgraded trans valve body, and 4.56 gears. So much so that I tow my camper and compact tractor with the GX, both of which turn a lot of heads. Honestly my only complaints with the engine is that 1) mine has the dreaded "ECU glitch" that throws a SAIS limp-home code in cold weather sometimes and 2) there is nothing I can do to add any more power to mine short of a supercharger, which I'm not going to spend the money on.I don’t have anything against an LS swap but it is just not what I want. If I give up on the vvti I would most likely go with a Supercharged non-vvti 2uz. I just don’t want to pay for the premium fuel that comes with the Superchsrger.
If I was to abandon the 2uz series all together I would probably go back to diesel before LS.
I still have a few other options to potentially work through before I abandon the VVTI.
Lucky for me I have a 2uz swapped FJ45 and a Tacoma to drive while I continue to work through this.
I still do think your problem must be solvable, but I'm personally at a loss as how it could be solved.
