No pics of the diff going into the housing. It was awkward and real tricky to get the copper tube into the housing undamaged. There just isn't much room. I ran the tube around the gear as shown in the ARB instructions. I'm going to see if I can borrow a video scope just to put my mind at ease.

New gasket kit from Kurt. This is a nice inexpensive kit to have around anytime you open the knuckles.

 So I got the bolts in and before I tightened them I was sitting on my stool looking at this and thought "something is missing"

Kurt had these universal boots on his website so I thought I'd try one.
IMG_4371.webp

Removed the joint. I use the same trick as the wheel studs. Take off the castle nut and invert it. put it back on s few threads. Hit it with the air hammer and she'll pop right off with no harm to the threads.
IMG_4372.webp

The poly boot fits quite nice. I was going to pop it over the body a little more but it actually has a fair bit of pressure pushing into the joint so i left it as shown. I like it.

I connected the airline at the diff and filled it with oil. Next is to re-organize the garage to pull the stock drive train and drop in the new rebuilt turbo 3B and the 5spd.

Man - you sure are a patient fellow to clean your hands enough to get all those greasy shots ;-) I just figured out an issue I had last fall when doing my front diff swap, when do the rotors switch from 6-bolts to the hub to pressing in the wheel studs? I had ordered a set of new rotors for my '79 and they sent me the ones you have, I needed to bolt on version (bolt hole dia is smaller) ... looking good!

You should see the shirt I was wearing, just wipe the grease off and grab the iphone.

I would have thought the discs changed in 79 like most other things. Perhaps you got an earlier axle in production or an axle swap early in life?

It's a '79 55, all kinds of oddities at the end of production ...

Where does one get a big tub of grease like that? Is that the Moly D stuff? Castrol?

I've only found it in the little tubes and it's a different color

I can't recall exactly where I got that tub but it was probably Canadian Tire. I don't think its anything special, just multipurpose wheel bearing grease. I have another one that is a green color.

Found a big tub at NAPA. Can Tire didn't have anything but tubes and little tubs.

Man, you're getting a lot of work done. Awesome. That new drivetrain is gonna look sweet in that truck
