After my starter issue this weekend, I have decided to install my underhood light: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/477897-rth-starter-stuck-running.html

Source: 96 GMC Suburban
Item: Under hood Reel Light. self contained long enough to reach the back of the cruiser

I still need to source the globe to cover the bulb.

that looks pretty cool!

and a little off topic, but can someone please tell me what "RTH" stands for!? I keep seeing it in thread titles and have no idea!

I have been wanting to add a light like this to the Cruiser...my 1972 240Z had an underhood lamp from the factory...IMHO, why didn't Toyota have one with their flagship vehicle? Oh well, we can improve upon these rigs; actually isn't that what drives many of us on mud?

I have the same thing only its mounted in the rear of the vehicle. it sure comes in handy.

It would definitely make sense to install another in the engine bay.

Glad to see another former Z owner here. I had a mint '72 240Z I'd restored over the last 8 years that was totaled in January when a guy fresh off the boat from Asia ran a red light. Why the state of Texas decided to give him a license when he clearly did not know a damn thing about our traffic laws is beyond me. I was lucky to make it out unharmed. I sure miss my Z, but the Land Cruiser gives me a start on something new to me.

I guess they figured, since its their flagship vehicle, the owners wouldnt look under the hood if something was wrong, they would bring it to the dealer :)

Have you come up with a holder that would allow for two free hands when working under the hood? I was thinking of something for under the hood too, as I am always dropping a flash light as I work or just poke around.

Hmm, my "old" Z one had a hook on the back to hang from the hood...any similar hook or clamp would definitely be nice.

Z ones are pretty cheap (and made by Hitachi IIRC) Datsun 240z,260z,280z,280zx,510 Under Hood Light - NICE | eBay

GMC ones not too bad either 88 89 90 91 92 93 94 CHEVY GMC TRUCK UNDER HOOD LIGHT | eBay

Even the Supra came with one TOYOTA SUPRA 85-87 OE UNDERHOOD WORK LIGHT | eBay

P.S. Andrew, yup miss my Z too. Bought mine in 1983, drove it in College, then fully restored it with and for my younger brother in the late 90's and he then totaled it. Still love the inline 6's (240Z, M3, now FZJ80)

Thats cool, did you get it at a pick n pull? How much light does it put out/equal to a good flashlight?

Yes, a pick n pull in NC. I owned a 96 sub previously and the lighting in very good. i am thinking of going led later.

Hands free... I plan to cut a piece of flexible magnet strip for the back. this way I just stick it above..

Steve,

Great links...

I got one from a Z with the hook and it works great for many years. Still, I think I wouldn't mind having a long LED strip stuck to the underside of the hood. I think this would illuminate the engine bay nicely.

Steve

Because they did not expected it to break
