For those of you who know of my epic adventure finding the campground at GSMTR I just -think- I found that I was driving all around McNabb before I diverted to Tellico Plains to take paved roads to GSMTR. (In my defense it was dark and the :princess: was quite .)

(this turned out to be a 7 hour trip from Greenville to GSMTR...should have been 3.5)

Attaboy!!

hey smitty, I'll have that table at the office today. If you can stop by anytime after lunch that'd be great.

I'll do that....and wow your up early! Are you sure that commute from Decatur isn't that bad?:D

EDIT: NEVERMIND......I SEE THAT MY TIME ZONE IS STILL SET TO PACIFIC. Therfore it is showing that you posted at 4:15am.

Carry on

I'll pick it up for you, assuming I can find this place...

I thought you were caravaning with Steen? The map links in the first post have been updated for better directions.

I will also post a couple of roadside signs as you get closer to the campsite area. It will probably just say "OTMT ---->" so keep an eye out for those after you pass the Green Cove gas station/convenience store.

He is... and he's probably assuming I can't find this place. He might be right :D

If cell reception = :bang: is there a way for family at home to get in touch? Has that been covered already? I found the number for the Murphy police and fire stations. Anything at OMT?

Cell reception is not good at all. You might get lucky with a text message, but sustaining a voice call is darn near impossible. Going back to Green Cove is probably the best shot for finding a pay phone. If that doesn't work, then you'll have to head towards Tellico Plains, TN to get back to modern civilization. There is no established plan for us to receive phone calls - and some of us prefer it that way. :D

There are some places on the trails where you can get cell service, depending on your carrier and your phone. So, they'll just have to know that you'll be incommunicado for a few days.

I noticed on the google map in the first post that, coming from Asheville, it has us going through Robinsville rather than murphy and dropping down off the Cherohalla Skyway. Is this the best way?

Smymtn and I are convoying (does 2 make a convoy?) Saturday a.m.

Unless you really need to get something in Murphy, I think taking the Skyway would be a quicker route to McNabb for anyone coming from a northern area.

Thanks Rick!!! I got very, very lost when I went to GSMTR, so advice is helpful!!! I'll be bringing my $20 in cold hard cash . . .

I will say this. Unless you have gps, or a really good map, or a great sense of direction, or have written the millages down or have been to McNabb before I would not reccomend to anyone to try to come in after dark.

Be prepared. Just don't glance at the map and think you can make it. The current Pres., VP., and Sec., have all gotten lost at Tellico. And I can tell you from personal experience it is no fun.

More direction links...
Google Maps ~ Asheville to McNabb Campground

Google Maps ~ Murphy to McNabb Campground

Google Maps ~ Cary (Raleigh), NC to McNabb Campground mtbcoach is going to get the iron butt award I think.

Google Maps ~ Greenville via Clemson to McNabb Campgroung

After playing around with Google Maps a little more, it may be quicker for just about everyone in GA to take the route up 68 through Tellico Plains and then east into McNabb. There is definitely more pavement on this route.

Google Maps ~ Alpharetta to McNabb Campground

Google Maps ~ downtown Atlanta to McNabb Campground

X2 on coming in from Tellico from Atlanta! I got so lost I ended up in Tellico before I ended up at the ORV.

If you do take that route, be sure to stop by the ranger station along the River Road and pick up a FREE map of the area. This is a high quality color map of Tellico and will help keep you oriented in the future (I am pasting mine to the inside of my windshield!!!) The ranger station has also been renovated and it is quite nice and may be your last chance for porcelin for quite some time.
