Those climates in the north must be just horrible for metal!! You have things rusting inside your house! :)
 
Congratulations Rick:clap:. I know its been a lot of work and talking to you at windrock about the setback w/ the CNC on the final leg and getting wrong castings has got to make having these in your hands that much sweeter.

thanks for the compliments. It has been a long process but still enjoyable.

Right now the castings are out for the final process of cleaning. What is done is to use a heavy abrasive and sand blast the passages to remove any casting material and flakes to ensure that nothing will dislodge and damage the turbo.

For those interested. I talked with the machinist and realistically the next step would be an order of 10 pieces. Along with that, fixtures would need to be made and that cost would be amortized through the 10 pieces.

Right now I want to start building up the system on the donor engine for people to get a better idea of how things fit together and in the engine bay.

Honestly most of what goes into a turbo is off the shelf items. And as always there is always many ways to do it so leaving it up to the individual to decide is best.

I'll be making heat shields and braces for the manifold to complete it.

The other non shelf item is the down pipe. I'm going to run with a GT35R turbo but a cheaper 60-1 or more expensive GT4088R could also be a choice and I'm not sure how compatible the three are as far as the down pipe would be.

I'll start another thread and do my best to provide a list of what I used to help others. Somebody might be able to organize group buys on that stuff to help save some money but that person won't be me.

my target was for around $3500.00. But there is a $1000.00 swing between the three turbos I listed above.

So are you going budget or extreme? Are you buying a brand new SSQ BOV or a junk yard take off of an Audi?

Lots of choices and they all impact the price.

I'll be starting a build thread with tearing down the motor and evaluating it prior to installing the turbo. Once everyone sees what I'm doing I'm sure cost saving ideas will surface.

The two biggest costs are the manifold and the turbo.

The manifold has a T4 turbo outlet.

There was a thread a long time ago which talked about sizing a turbo for our engines. That would be a good read in helping you decide on what you might like and help narrow down the cost on that.
 
Are you planning to overhaul the engine or just replace the head gasket?

I'm doing a full break down and eval and will only replace the items that need replacing.

So if the mains all check out then that's what I'll run, and so on. I've got plans to get real stupid with this thing and want to know that a failure was a limit of the stock design and not from an existing condition.

x2, I would be interested in this, as well as a bung for a wideband O2 on one of your exhaust setups! I have no fab/metalworking skills or tools so a bolt on manifold/turbo/exhaust would be the best option for me :D
