Inspired

Thanks Crusty!! I have just acquired an ADF Troopy (All there except canvas). I was fortunate enough to get a beauty with low km's etc. This post gives me some great ideas (bars etc).

nice work crusty! found your posts randomly researching for a soft top for my 45 troopy. havent heard of any one doing it over here and i've been obsessing the idea! cant wait to see more of the progress, looks like you've got it sussed.

still waiting for parts... :meh: what is with some people?

this will be the last project i ever do requiring that much "outside" work. if you want something done right (or right now), do it yourself i guess.

have a few mates coming over today to help lift the cage back in. i'll post a few more pics of the progress so far.

cheers

well...

i am kind of stalled at the moment. i can't seem to get a windshield channel.

so can't install the top (that finally got here:meh:) but bows, paint, herculiner, cage and new panels are in, but not quite finished.

chasing some electrical problems too (looks like it's my own fault) but hey... s*** happens.

slowly putting the interior back together, but have quite the collection of new and "new to this cruiser" parts piling up that will have to wait till all the little s*** gets done.

so many dramas with this build so far, i'm a bit fed up:bang:

starting to look like it should, and runs and moves, but far from done or road worthy.

dave, i'm over in murarrie. pm and stop by for a beer some time.

cheers

Crusty,
windshield channel, i'll have a look in the shed when i get home.
If all else fails, might be able to source some from Qld Cruisers up at Rocky. www.qldcruisers.com.au

My brother inlaw travels that way every 2-3 weeks for his work. cheap and easy transport

 .........love to, and check your build in the flesh.

 Dave

pm trollhole....i think he made some windshield channels? .... i know somebody here had made a bunch

i did check with him, but he said it's just at the prototype stage right now.

got a bit done, now that the floods are over and the rain has stopped for about 5 seconds.

the tub has been lined from edge to edge and from just over the pedals on the firewall, right to the back doors. the cage "sits" in it for now, GOT SOME WINDSHIELD CHANNEL!

thanks atlassx1, i did bolt it on using the 7 holes on the top of the windscreen frame, but the camera died and did not get any shots

fairly simple deal, used the existing hole for "weld on" application in the center, then just drilled out what i needed for the rest, after i put M5 nutserts in the holes on the windscreen frame.

with the hole spacing on the windscreen frame, and the channel, it all worked out with lots of material around each hole, while only having to enlarge the center one.

fit was reeeeeeeally tight, should have moved the center line of the holes back about 3mm. that would have allowed for a bit more gap for the rope rail on the soft top, but it still worked.

so i thought i would flop the top over, get it out of the shed and have a look.

soooo many little things to bolt up, fit and finnish now. the bulk of it is on but i'm nowhere near done for now, i think it's come good:D

wouldn`t it be better to restore a boat in Queensland ,
never thought that a part of Australia get such a lot of rain!
Cheers
Peter

yes, unfortunately, a boat is the go around these parts right now...

i moved to this country to try and get AWAY from rain, but it would seem to have followed me and poured no-stop for the last three years.

i do feel terrible for all the people who have suffered so much loss, the floods have been devastating.

Well... I'm still not finished. Soooooo close to being on the road at long last... But.

Queensland transport has changed the rules and my cage cannot be engineered. Found out today! WTF? (It's not a recent thing... Shame on me for waiting so long)
Not sure what I'll do, all my other modifications are fine by my engineer, it's just the cage. Who wants to drive a double locked, geared, soft top cruiser with no protection forward of the " b " pillar?
Maybe the numbskulls at DOT think that's a good idea.
You'll need a bloody permit to change your oil in Queensland soon!
Well at least you can go SOA now... Just can't have a 6 point cage! Good on ya' DOT.
Won't be 3 years till the next update... Maybe a "for sale" in the classified soon.
A cruiser like this doesn't seem to be appreciated this side of the pond.

The change to the roll cage law was part of Queensland adopting the National Code of Practice for Vehicle Modification or some such. I'd be raising the issue with your engineer if they have been part of the process from the start and knew what you had planned, they should have known and advised you. Secondly, try talking to another person at DOT, I recall reading somewhere that if the changes/modifications were started under the old system, they can still be approved, but this might have applied to engine changes. And it could be hard to prove that the work was done before the change.

Good luck, Id wondered what happened to this rig, the idea of driving a soft top troopy down Fraser of Moreton appeals to me.

Was driving through Coorparoo this afternoon when I saw a soft top troopy inside a small, family owned mechanical workshop. Skidded to a stop, backed her up and went inside to find this gem. It's truly beautiful.

I'd hazard a guess and say 2H, H55, discs, steer (?), and what I knew was probably the only metaltech cage in the country. Boom :)
