@jamesurq I've stayed at that campground twice in the last month, spots c6 and c8 on the big pond. The old guys were nice to my wife and I. We had major rain on my first trip there, almost 4 inches, and the creek overflowed the banks, and was just a couple inches below the bottom of the bridge.
Fishing isnt quite as good as you would think, other than panfish in the bigger pond. Both ponds and the creek get fished quite heavily.
We sleep with earplugs, so the train didnt really bother us (we can hear the trains in the distance at our home too, so its a bit of a comfort thing for my wife). Wifi was good on Friday night, but as more peeps came in on saturday, it slowed way down. They let me do a late checkout on Sunday, so i was very happy with that.
Next time youre over that way, and want to be further southwest near Bryson City, try Turtle Creek Campground in Almond, NC. They cater to small campers, popups, teardrops, vans, etc. Many sites are right on the creek, tucked into trees. Not a lot of room at all for big rigs. We had a reservation last oct, and it was reasonably priced. Had to cancel because of a major pain flareup. Would love to get over there this fall.
Jamie, You should run up to Pilot Mtn and look at Rustic Trail Teardrops. They dont have a full blown offroad camper offering yet, but are solidly built, and very reasonably priced. Or buy mine, and I'll have them build another one for me, with some sides and a pop top wedge for more headroom that I'd design for their CNC cutter
