Trail Gear just announced these a few days ago. Price is tempting! If you've bought anything TG before you know their website shows MSRP so you could find their products cheaper through any of their dealers. I'm sure we'll see these in the mid-$500 range soon.

I know everyone loves to hate TG, but what are your thoughts on these?

UPDATE: $299 as of February 2016!!!

Low range gears for $500 is worth the gamble to me :) I've bought various doodads from TG over the years, but mainly brackets/fabrication stuff and of course their cheapo sliders. Everything went fine for me, although it's hard to screw up a leaf spring hanger

Might make stock gears and bigger tires a better option after the turbo goes on.

My buddy said to get in touch with these guys, they can do much better than MSRP. TG dealer, but they don't have it on their website yet. SideTracked Offroad - Off Road LED Lights, LED Light Bars

How does this affect AWD vehicle performance? Is it too much of a reduction (I don't know stock drive gear ratios off the top of my head)?

Doesn't say what type of metal the gears made of. Isn't all TG Chinese made?

I would spend the extra $ and get the Marlin ones. Trail gear stuff is hit or miss and most of the time is just junk. Marlin crawler gears are the same reduction, made in Japan, and are proven to be worth the money by the people who already have them in their 80s. Why even risk screwing up the whole transfer case to save $300?

Like what? I wheel with lots of guys that have entire trucks built with TG parts and have yet to see any parts fail due to poor quality.

I hate to say it, but try 4wheelparts. They sell TG stuff and you can usually find a coupon code.

Maybe TG might do a group buy.

Also was cruising polyperformance website and they had them also for $599

It's good to have more products coming out for the 80 series. As the sale price comes down on the 80s, we will see more & more of them get retired from soccer mom duty to trail duty. Which hopefully we will see more trail products come out for them. Supply & demand.
A couple months ago I visited Trail Gear in Fresno, CA. As I was talking to... I forgot his name, well he told me about these T gears coming out & to also look forward to many more 80 series products coming out in the future if only they could get the owner of Trail Gear to stop driving the fzj80 test vehicle. It seems he rather drive that around than any other Toyota he owns... go figure. Hmm.
I did ask about bumpers & such, he smiled like he was telling a secret saying that they will be bringing out more products 80 series.
The T gears is a good sign that Trail Gear is serious about the 80 series as a profitable model of Toyota to make products for.
I have a set of Marlin Crawler T gears in my Lexi450 & I can say the 25% reduction is amazing. It's well worth the full price I paid for them. Just for reference, they are a bit lower than what 5:29s would be.
I hope these are a great set of gears & TG does well with them along with the other 80 series products they are coming out with.

Nugget

Wouldn't it be extremely expensive to tool up just to build these gears? May come out of the same place at the Marlin ones, just rebadged?

Chineseium.

I get plenty have TG and while it works - these are gears you (obviously) would want to have made from the best alloy you can in your drivetrain.

My experience with TG was a ill fitting diff cover I sent back & just tossed a liitle extra plate around the drain, it was supposed to fit but wasn't even possible despite their insist it would. It was a wrong application it was so far off. I never tried them again.

If price reflects the simple fact they stole Marlin's design & copied, then whatever - but if the difference is good hardened steel vs "Chineseium" (awesome BTW cardona!) - I'm sick of china's lame pot metal crap to a point I pay extra to avoid. Or make a fix.

I rather pay $300 for not thinking about TC gears again, or being like that guy early this week with the roached stock gears in his case. I bet he'd buy Marlin.
