Wouldn't it be extremely expensive to tool up just to build these gears? May come out of the same place at the Marlin ones, just rebadged?

That's the $64,000 question right there.

So, this only replaces the the low speed gear ? So only gives you reduction when in 4lo. Theoretically, if you were to replace the other gear in the transfer case you could get some reduction in 4 hi ? My point being rather than re gear two differentials you could just re-gear the transfer case similar to what the Suzuki guys do ?

Correct. This is only a reduction when the transfer case is in low gear, which is what I think you'd want anyways. These gears are the only off-the-shelf option for low range gearing with the stock FJ80 TC (currently at least).

Here's a little chart I made showing gear ratios and final crawl ratios using different configurations when we found out a doubler was a possibility

Aren't we just assuming that the tg gears are made of a inferior metal to the Marlin gears? Or does anyone have any proof of this line of thinking?

Welcome to the Internet - where opinions are facts and sources don't matter.

But a word like Chineseium just bears repeating, fact or otherwise!
(New term to me, never heard that one)

We could call them Harbor Freight gears if that seems any more nonsensical just so we know all here is pure speculation (like how long a HF tool lasts)?

But if you could reduce the high side, it would save you the money and effort of re gearing x2 differentials ? For those of us who aren't quite up to speed on setting up a diff, or don't want to invest in the extra tools and fixtures for doing it. I know for Suzuki samurai owners this is often done, however, it may put slightly more stress on the drivetrain.

But what if you need to run down the interstate at 80mph? Remember these rigs are full time 4wd.

I've have there gears in my Zuki and I beat the s*** out of it and never had a problem with them . Been running them for 8 hard years . The last pic it is on 38

Why do they only make these for AWD cases :( why not us part timers.

but do you know that the TG gears are actually made in China? that's what I am asking. What are you basing your opinion on that they are junk made in china? OR are you just assuming. Not trying to be argumentative just actually trying to find any actual information on how they truly differ from marlin gears?

You're comparing one of the lightest rigs to one of the heaviest. Not an apples to apples scenario.

Yes you are right but I would never wheel my 80 as hard as I do my Zuki. How often do you jump your 80 or dump the clutch to pull a wheelie or roll it 8 times in one day?

I don't and wouldn't do that in anything. But I've definitely gotten airborn, with it floored, trying to get up 3' tall ledges in my 80. There's guys on here that wheel their 80 pretty hard, including the OP.

China is on my s*** list!! I hope the Marlin gears are not made in China bc I planned to order some in the near future.

Follow along with me here. If you switch to 4.88 gears it affects your final gearing. If you switched the high gear in your transfer case, it would do the same thing. The ratios would have to be worked out, but it should be no different. The difference is that many of us can pull a transfer case apart and swap gears out. Lots of us have never tried to re gear a 3rd member.

a guy could always get a PMI test done.... itll tell you right away what the metal is..... not the most expensive thing to do
