Progress

Had a day off from work today, started with a fresh cup of coffee in my Toyota Genuine Parts mug ( courtesy of Lowe Toyota ). Started measuring out the old rotted floor pan and got it cut out. Started measuring out the replacement piece but ran out of time. Also got some more pieces put on the motor. More to come after the weekend.

Isuzu Diesel

Forgot about the three picture rule. Here is an updated picture of the diesel engine

Nice looking engine!

Be sure to put that coolant bypass hose on before you put it in the truck.

For sure, getting all new hoses and trying to figure out how the alternator and a/c compressor go back on the mount bracket. Hopefully in the next few days I can get the engine and trans mocked up in the frame with the half body on to check for clearance.

Seat Mounts

While cutting out the floor rot in the project, I noticed something unusual. The seat mounts in the red body are lower, its an 87 model. The seat mounts in the old brown truck are much taller, its an 84 model. The mount holes are way off for the 84 seats to go in the 87 body. Thinking about taking the risers out of the brown body and putting them in the project body. Any input on the reason for the difference or thoughts on replacing the risers.

Looks like it was done to allow room for the rear heater. Interesting my brothers 87 HJ60 has rear heat and I think the low seat mounts....hmm maybe a lower profile rear heater?

I will have to check that out, I have both heaters and will measure it and let you know.

Oh the engine looks great too!

Thanks, it's coming back together slowly. Got the alternator bracket chromed for a touch of bling for the old girl. Just haven't gotten it back on yet. Still trying to figure out how it mounts back on the bracket.

Well, just went out and measured the heaters. Measured them in the same place and they are the same size. Maybe the brackets under the 87 seats are different. I know when I went to check the passenger seat out of the 84 into the 87, the mount holes were off. If you lined one up, the other three were off. May just get 87 seats to go back in it, but don't want to spend the money for seats. Changing the brackets may be the only option.

The 87 seat rails have higher brackets in the rear.

The rust you are fixing here looks to me, to come from leaking gutters up front. Make sure you clean out and repair them too before you paint, or put her back out in the rain.
Mine fills up with water there and the cracked, old body sealant in the gutters is the source.

Guess its gonna be easier to get 87 seats and put those in, instead of drilling out spot welds and rewelding the brackets. Was gonna get the seats reupholstered anyway. Thanks Johnny

The original roof was rotted out and the lower part at the base of the "A" pillar was rusted and has a quarter size hole. That was what caused most of the rust and rot. This is why two different colors on the body, put a better roof on it. Replacing the body sealant in the gutters is on the list for sure. Thanks Sir, it is always good to have some one elses input.

No problem man!

If it'd help, I have a set of 87 seat rails that I drilled the seat rivets out of. Used them to mount some aftermarket seats. You can have the set (both rails, both sides, 4 total) for the cost of shipping.

Do you think that would work? Seems like when I put the 84 seats in there, they were too narrow. Not sure that replacing the rails would work. Maybe some one else that has experience in this will chime in, or if you think they would work. Let me know what shipping would be also.

I have no idea if the 87 seat rails would bolt to the 84 seats. I'm sure it's nothing more than a piece of flat steel and a couple of welds away if they don't bolt together :hillbilly:

No clue what shipping would be. Send me $30 and I'll send them your way, that should cover it.

EDIT:
Thinking about it more, I vaguely remember that the feet of the seat rails are not centered on the rail, but offset. I don't remember how much though...

You said you were going to get your seats upholstered....I would consider investing in all new seats. I out procar ones in. Although they weren't cheap, on my longest drive to LA (~350 miles in one day) and back, they were really excellent.

Patch Panel In

Got the patch panel cut out of the old brown body and tack welded into the red body. There is one small hole in the patch panel about the size of a dime. Will probably patch the hole to make it look good. Next is the front area on the drivers side "A" pillar.

Haven't forgotten about you Johnny. Still thinking about what I'm going to do.

Trans/Crossmember Problem

While I was getting things ready to do a mock up of the trans and cross member, ran into a problem. Then H55 does not seat all the way down on the 84 model cross member. Any suggestions on what to do?

Get a post84 cross member? Anyone know if it will bolt up to the frame?

Also, if you are moving it all forward, maybe make a new cross member?
