Haven't forgotten about you Johnny. Still thinking about what I'm going to do.

No worries, they're not going anywhere

While I was getting things ready to do a mock up of the trans and cross member, ran into a problem. Then H55 does not seat all the way down on the 84 model cross member. Any suggestions on what to do?

Looks like you have a pre-85 crossmember there. Does the crossmember bolt to the inside of the frame rails or to the bottom?

Get a post84 cross member? Anyone know if it will bolt up to the frame?

Also, if you are moving it all forward, maybe make a new cross member?

May just make a new one. When I put just the cross member in, it would not move more than an inch from the original location. May make a narrower one and move it forward about 4-6 inches hopefully. Gonna read your thread from start to finish again to get some ideas of what you have done. I'm sure I'll have question for you tomorrow.

No worries. I still need to finish writing up some of the stuff that I did....I'm slacking on my duties to the community.

I would think 3-4 is where you want to move it too. I moved my radiator back maybe 3-4 inches and put my intercooler in front of it, which I would recommend. I then have an electric fan installed. There is still 3-4+ inches of space between the fan and the engine. I can measure the exact distance if I remember when I get home tonight... Sadly don't know when that will be.

My engine doesn't have an intercooler. Plain Jane stock 4BD1t. I'm gonna go to a friends house and measure how much distance he has from the stock radiator and the front of his fan. His is a plane old stock 60. That will give me a good idea where I need to be at.

It is from an 84 and it bolts to the inside of the frame rail.

I would consider leaving room for an intercooler if you decide to upgrade. Aparently it's a massive power upgrade. Mine is a 4bd1t but I added one on.

The h55 and its mount are designed for the post-85 crossmembrr which is flat TN the center, and bolts to the bottom of the frame rails.

Hey Johnny, you wouldn't happen to have an extra one laying around the garage would you? Is this cross member you speak of like the one I have, in that it is three parts. One piece that goes on each frame rail and a center section that bolts to the bottom of the trans and to the frame rail pieces?

Sorry I haven't made it out to measure my truck yet. Its been a crazy week with work and little sleep. Will try again tomorrow.

I do not have a spare crossmember. Mine was modified for my SOA suspension and pretty grimey. I believe it got thrown out.

The post '85 crossmember is one piece. It bolts to the frame from the bottom, into brackets that are welded onto the frame from the factory.

See here. Transmission is bolted to the crossmember, and the crossmember is being held up to the frame with straps in the first picture. The second picture is one of the mounts that's welded to the frame.

The frame that I got from ACC in Georgia looks just like the frame you have pictured. It didn't come with the cross member and I have since cut the two inside brackets off. They were a PITA to get off and are not reuseable at all. So from what I see, two brackets on each frame rail and then the cross member bolts to the brackets. Will have to do some searching to find one of these cross members. Any idea of the angle that the brackets on the bottom of the transmission are? Thanks Johnny

No problem man, I'll check again to see if I have my old crossmember. I'd check the partout section here on mud, or contact one of the mud vendors, like cruiserparts.net, to see if you can pick up a post 85 FJ60 crossmember.

What do you mean the angle of the brackets on the bottom of the transmission? The transmission mount, where it bolts to the crossmember, is flat.

I have a spare 85 cross member. It is solid but was modded for driveline clearance for SOA. I built a new one when I did my swap.

Pm me if interested

Clint

Let me ask this question, is it possible to change out the mounts on the bottom of the transmission to the 84 mounts? If that would work, then I would be set.

Thanks Clint, see the above question. If this doesn't work, I may send you a PM and let you know.

I have to say one thing, the MUD COMMUNITY is AWESOME. You guys rock!!!!!!!!!!

Gotcha. I have no idea. I've never seen an early 60 transmission mount.

However, the h55 and h42 should have the same mounting pattern.

I think they look the same. I will take a picture of the one that I have and compare to the ones on the H55. Thanks Johnny.

From the original front of where the radiator was, I have a 4" spacer, then the radiator, and then there is about 7" to the engine fan plate. I am using a ford contour fan, so some of that 7" is taken up

Hey Mitch, thanks for measuring that for me. Gives me a good starting point to where I need to be at.

Good news, good news !!!! The trans mounts from the 84 bolt right up to the bottom of the transmission. This is great, now the cross member bolts to the trans and now I can get it all mounted up to the engine. Next is to get every thing mocked up with the half cab and check for clearance. Did find a one thing that is gonna set me back just a little. The clutch fork that is part of the slave cylinder is broke. Now I'll have to find another one to fix the slave cylinder. Waiting to hear back from Mitch (Dazed) to find out why the stock slave cylinder does not work with the adapter kit. Pictures to come later today.

Glad to hear that you got it mounted up! Bummer that the slave cylinder is broken, but at least you're making progress :D
