Toyota V12 into 105

Hi this is my first post here, and ive come across this build of which i am very impressed. Also the daring determination and bollock size of the engineers. Without reading everything about this build, i just wanted to ask if this engine is internally stock, or have the rods been upgraded. As you are most likely aware some chaps in Aussie found out just how weak these V12 rods are when boosted. I have a rod here on my desk which is out of my V12, and im sticking to NA and am changing these out for some forged rods, why? because i want to rev it a bit more, and second, ive discovered how to upgrade these for cheap (relatively) so if you would like to know how to do it, just ask, it involves using rods from a very popular performance engine, the parts for which are plentiful and cheap. Good luck with the build, look forward to seeing it run. Cheers Guy

This is starting to sound insane! :p I'm super excited to see how it turns out

Also, what state are you in? This is something that seems like it'd be sooooo much cooler in person!

Sorry Mate , you'll have to fly United. I'm in South Africa. But I'll put you up at my place if you want to be here for the dyno test!

Guy

I'd appreciate any info you can give me. The plan is to tune the engine for low down torque and as stated at our altitude we're down about 20% on power. I was thinking of limiting revs to about 5000.

Dion has a 105 and it's in South Africa.

Honestly hoser, you seem to know everything. Like... everything...

As much as I'd love to fly out to SA, I'm going back to school in a couple weeks

But since I can't go out there to experience it, I'm gonna have to ask that you post the results on here :D

Hey Dion,
Well I'm going to tell you because as a yarpie I trust you will be a top chap, you bokkies are legit.
Haven't met one that wasn't. Only yesterday I removed my rod from the piston and measured the centre to centre length. It's 5.36 in. Nissan SR20rods are 5.365 so will raise compression a little bit, but I'm thinking the pistons could have their bowl machined a little and there's a bit of shrouding around the valves you should really hack off the head to improve boosted flow and lower comp. SR20 big end is correct size, only you will need to resize the width and make it asymmetrical like the 1gz-fe. Last thing is the wrist pin. SR20 rod would need rebushing to make the hole 21mm not 22mm, you could even offset the pin lower to lower comp. any machinist should be able to make that happen.
There's plenty of cheap rods like eagle out there, or even if u fitted standard Nissan rods, they would be an upgrade.
There pretty easy eh?

Thanks Guy, would never have thought of looking into the Datsun bin Toy spares. Will investigate. What do you use the V12 for?

onlyguy, just to clarify, are you talking about SR20DE rods or SR20DET rods? I believe the later to be a little bit stronger... but both are interchangeable.

(several years and many dollars later, I'm almost done with my SR20DET engine swap into my Datsun!)

Hi, I'm not too sure. But if you do an ebay search for sr20 rods, you will find some with the following specs
Big end bore 2.008
length 5.365
Pin 22mm
those are the ones.

no problem, it would have been easy to get some custom rods made but expensive, i think i can buy some eagle rods for the sr20 and machine them to fit for about half the cost of custom.

So far the V12 is just an expensive garage ornament, but will hopefully be finding its way under the bonnet of my JZX100 sedan with manual trans and ITB's. I have had the head flowed and the intake flows the same as a 4age, just the exhaust is rubbish, thats one of the reasons why the aussie guys hit the wall with flow issues and couldnt coax it over 350whp. So im porting my head and maybe doing a cam grind, then custom manifold and ITB's, all run with a Haltech. I have a motorsport engine builder looking at my head and im planning to get the work started in the next few weeks. I will let you know how things progress.

FTFY!

Great. Keep it going - and keep it coming.
Lucky 100 - parked next to a 40 !

X-mas time means lotsa garage time, right?

Just out of curiosity, IF you were to have someone do the service on it, say, change the spark plugs, and oil change, how much more do you think it may cost over the stock, IF you could find a shop to do it.
You can give the difference between V8 cost and V12 cost as a percentage, since we'd be trying with all the fingers on both hands to figure out the exchange rate of your dollar and the USD over here. ;-)

No prices in this link, but sure is an interesting read.
