So I've become convinced I need a locking hitch pin. The best one, at least the most expensive one, seems to be the ones made by Amplock. I like the locking mechanism and that the cotter pin goes through the lock AND the pin. But I'm wondering if it will fit the closed in area of the receiver and if it does, whether it will it interfere with the chains.
So are any of you running with these locks?
Or, you got some other brand/model you like?

I’m probably going to get flamed because of the “I hate money” cost of this one but I got a good deal when I bought a ton of stuff from them a couple years ago and they sold me a couple of them with matching keys. There room in my Dissent bumper to get the key in there and rotation isn’t a factor because it’s round and straight and doesn’t interfere with the chains. The dust cover stays on as well.

This the one that I use. It has the extra length we need and with the key being perpendicular to the pin you can turn the key when it, inevitably, becomes jammed.

And I have an update on the life expectancy of a Tekonsha P3 controller. After installation in an ‘08 LC and then a ‘14 Lx and braking 3 different trailers it has passed on. Obviously it hasn’t been hooked up to trailers all the time but it has quite a few of the 300,000 miles the trucks travelled and was powered on for almost all of them. I hope that i get as long a life from the new one.

Am i the last person ever to see this on the towing plug flap?

It served a long life! As I have the same one, curious how it failed?

Replacing with the same?

Im not sure why it failed. I had hooked up the cable to test the brakes before a trip in the new trailer and pulled ahead before unplugging. The contacts got a little “squished” and i had to re-spread a few of them. I may have shorted out something but no fuses blew. I did have a fairly long term problem previously with the brake wiring in the axle tube shorting out but the brakes have been just fine for a year or two after remediation. I was worried that a accumulative activation of the “short circuit” circuitry may have, somehow, weakened the controller so I was leaning toward the controller being the issue. Because the controller doesn’t send voltage on a short it is hard to troubleshoot so after physically checking out the trailer wiring I plugged into the other trailer and found the same result. I took a chance and ordered a new P3 and it solved the issue. As an old school kinda guy I am constantly impressed with the operation of the P3 and the new version hasn’t disappointed me. And it plugged in to the same harness and uses the same hanger. Win win.

2721s are progressive, right? If you don’t need 2723 normally you might look at those since they are a 270/340# progressive which should help with towing. Airbags might also help but I’d start with a progressive spring.

Ignore what the Toyota alignment says… Caster should be more like 3.5* on a lifted truck. Camber should be 0 or maybe a tad negative. When you add weight to the rear the front end lifts… camber increases (more positive) and caster decreases.
I have 2723 in rear. 2021. Bp51@ 2”. LRA 24 gallon. Dissent rear bumper and tire carrier. Goose Gear dual drawer/floor system all the time. I occasionally tow a small XV2 Trailer but have towed a 20’ deck over. The springs are perfect ride quality for the constant load and stepping when towing. 43k miles at this point. I did play with BP51 settings in the rear to dial in the compression to get the right feel, which is of course somewhat subjective.

I’ve pretty much accepted that the move from my current 2722’s to 2723’s is inevitable. Just today I took a page out of @linuxgod book and made a spreadsheet measuring each corner height at various loads and airbag pressures in an attempt to convince myself that the 2722’s are enough…. They just fall short. Honestly, the move will likely mean that my airbag pressures get cut in half when towing.

My issue now is do i replace them now or wait until after this big trip we are leaving for in less than a week. I could probably get them in time but I think I’m going to wait until we are back. It’s just too close to departure and I don’t want to be fiddling around with springs potentially running into a situation that causes a panic mode scenario before we leave. As it sits now we’re comfortably moving towards departure with packing, planning, and prepping going smoothly. No need to rock the boat this late in the game. Plus my kids are officially out of school tomorrow and I’m the stay at home parent so I’ve got my plate full already.

One question about your BP51’s, are you able to adjust yours with the tires on? I may mess with these before hand but access to the area looks tight.

I adjusted my rear BP51’s with the supplied spanners early on. The wheels were left on. I did it on a Starbucks parking lot as the initial stock ride was too floating like and I had more body roll than I wanted for on road. I have not changed them since. And yes I have driven across the nation 2 times and done LCDC Offroad several times with a wonderful to the point of not having to think about it, as the rig and I melt into one. (Sounds weird, but I just get to drive her and the suspension is not a factor of thought.)

Whenever I'm facing that same dilemma, I try to remember that every 15 minute job is one broken bolt away from an 8 hour nightmare.

100% my decision process on this one. I’m ahead of the game right now and cruising, instead of rushing, into departure so no need to add anything to the mix.

This has the potential of being a luxurious inside the garage type of thing… I’ll find out tomorrow.

That explains most of my nightmares

Where is the trip to this year? Post pics, you guys go awesome places and I love your setup
Thanks, that’s high praise in the company kept in this forum.

This year we’re going through New Mexico for a couple days at the Ice volcano and maybe in-laws depending on their schedule. Then Grand Canyon North Rim for a night, maybe 2, then Bryce Canyon. After Bryce we’re going to zig zag our way towards Moab trying to use as little pavement as possible until we either get to Moab or get sick of the heat. Then finish off in or around Telluride/Ouray to cool off before heading back to Georgia. 23 days in total and we’re taking suggestions on from anyone on anything worth checking out.

Funny I was planning a Moab area trip this year too. But I think we are going to Maine instead

Should be a great trip.

We talked about Maine just yesterday. Looking at the map the drive from Georgia up through all those massive cities with our camper sounds daunting. That may be a road trip for the manly van (our Toyota Sienna) instead. There’s so many great spots in the US, we’re so blessed.
