.....

another day another couple cutting wheels in the trash. I had a visitor today. Alaska60 (Tom) came by and watched and drank a beer or 3 and shared beer which is nice. But he also helped quite a bit. I had him cutting out bits of steel plate from the templates I was making him out of cardboard then I was welding them in. Finished up patching the holes in the firewall today. Next up is crossmember and crazy tunnel mods!

.....

Burned in the motor mounts and painted the new pieces of firewall. Then put the engine back in for the umpteenth time. Everything is looking good so far. Feels like I will be working on this thing forever. Cruise moab draws closer and closer. Starting to get a little nervous. But I keep trudging on. I started on the tunnel also. I pulled the removable part from my parts 55 to work with. It is dreadfully too small. the first pic is the cover sitting next to where it goes. The next is it in partially hacked up. I have to widen it lenghten it AND make it taller. Hopefully I can finish this tomorrow. Then I guess I'll get right to seat mounts for the front seat. The last pic is of aleks' 60 inside the shop looking all huge......

Was really hoping to finish the tunnel today. But that didn't work out. I started to make a skeleton out of 1/8th inch rod to get the shape I wanted for the tunnel. Then realized that I wanted to change the set up on the transfer case sticks. Changed from a 2 stick to a 3 stick where all the sticks only move forward and back. No more side to side stuff on the toyota t-case. Of course it is far from perfect. All strictly homebrew with stuff I had laying around because I am very poor. I even used a piece of broken drillbit for some linkage rod. So they are not all in one line but thats ok with me. I was thinking that since not very many people say anything that I must be doing everything completely wrong and nobody wants to bother telling me about it or I'm out of my mind....

Ha! I'm watching and learning... I just don't post as often as I would like. Great ideas and execution. Love the old drill bit... :)

Keep on keeping on!

Ha! I am just envious of all the shop time you get.

You've got some mad skills, I wish I could fab like you are doing on this project...

Ha! I am just envious of all the shop time you get.

All the shop time is compliments of being self employed and having no work. Which also leads to no money......
thus the shoestring or "drillbit shift linkage" budget.

It is definitely good to hear support. Thanks:beer:

Today finished up the shift linkages. Shortened one stick and changed the angle and added nobs. the baseball stayed but is on a different stick and added a golf ball. The center stick is just a boring regular nob. I will change that later when I think of something unique to ge there.
As for the tunnel I finished the skeleton and then made cardboard cut outs of all the different pieces then welded them in. I think it's like adult arts and crafts time! So those are the pictures of the day.

Looks better in person i must say!!!!! this is a great piggy!

It's been a little while since I updated. My first child was born just last night at 8:12 and he is 7 pounds 9 ounces and 21 inches long! His name is Geronimo Joe Jackson Smith.
So the pigs engine is in and all connected and test started. Upon reassembly I found that the water pump was on it's way out so swapped it out for one that I had on the shelf extra. Also switched out the 4 speed tcase because when it was on the road before it had a bad habit of popping out of low into neutral. I had a spare in the corner I put in. Finished crossmember and it's in and rattle canned. Changed the middle transfer case stick to a large wrench handle. I'll have to post a pic of that later. Tomorrow I'm taking apart my fj60 to donate some of it's parts to the 55 and some will go to a 67 fj40 I have laying by the shop. I better hurry up I have a touch less than 3 weeks to wrap up the 55 and have it ready for Moab.....

Congratulations on the birth of your son! He will have a fine piggy to inherit one day!

Baby looks great.....cutie. I'll see you at El Barno tomorrow. I need to also check my pinion/3rd on my 60....bearing maybe?
I'll pitch some time in on the pig while I'm there.....we'll have together for Moab...

Ha! my projoct pigs floor looks just like that! I even have a small block valve cover where the firewall used to be!

Congrats on the little one!

a little more updates. started on front seat mounts. after that fender time. here are some pics. the shifter picture the wrench in the middle is one of the shifters. the one of the crossmembers the one on the left is the old one which was a chevy one made to work. the replacement is the other one. much smaller and in between the frame rails. that picture is before I made a skid off of it to gaurd the toyota case. then of course the finished seat mount for the driver side. almost done with the passenger side.

Finished the passenger side seat mount and the backseat mount also today. The backseat came from Tom. He got it in the back of his 60 he bought up in alaska I believe. It was the 3rd seat which is kinda odd. But the good thing is that it fits between my tubbed out fenders. So here it is. As you can see I mounted it higher and further back to make the backseat more comfortable. More legroom is good right?
