Dragged this rusty ole girl home the other day for a buddy (guy in the drivers seat) Really tugged at the heart strings, white just like my last one. had 3 frozen breaks but winched it on to the trailer. Original plan for it was to pull the motor/drive train for his other truck.. but we may beat on this one for the summer and see how it goes. The under side is VERY rust. Has been sitting in the dirt/tall weeds since 2005.

Runs great when you spray gas in the intake. Pulled fuel tank and pump and we can't get the pump to do anything. Summit tank and e2000 pump on the way. Now to get the 3 frozen brakes loose....

First ever package from Japan... new fuel sender. Swapped it out after work today. No more temp and fuel peg and finally know how much gas is in the tank. Woohoo.

Also a few days ago I installed a City Racer Carb. I’m thoroughly impressed. Truck has never idled this low at easily 650 or this steady (when I first installed it and started her she literally was idling at about 300, freaking insane!). Vac gauge at a steady 22/23 at idle. Of all I’ve done and fought w/ this truck and that’s all she really ever needed, I’m blown away.

Before that I chopped the top arch off the ugly smittybilt tube bumper (I’ll add caps once I get it cleaned up) and reinstalled the grill and emblem. She’s finally starting to look like mine.

Cam bearings 3 & 2 installed yesterday w/ the help of a friend, in situ in driveway. Only the slightest bit stressful.
And then almost like a pat on the back for a job well done, I won a raffle prize from @reevesci, owner of Trail Tailor, of a lift kit!
Check out his page... lots of nice stuff for a variety of trucks as well as a knuckle centering tool. Could be a wise investment as a shared tool for the group.
And unless they sell on the Facebook marketplace or CL I may have 4 good used 35x12.5x15 BFGs on aftermarket rims for sale, possibly mudship to FG. The lift kit will downsize my monster sized shackles and make the tires a moot point. So shackles will be available too tho I’m clueless on brand as they’re pretty ugly at this time. Once I get them off maybe I’ll find some sort of markings.
Never had I expected I’d be this deep in wrenching just a few years after buying this truck. What a long strange and fun trip it is! Thanks for all those who’ve helped me this far.

Pretty rad raffle prize!! Congrats!

Took Wed. off from work, and made some progress on getting the 40. Had some frustrating intermittent starting / not starting issues, which I solved with new battery and ground cables. Chased all sorts of stuff before that: new fusible link, wire wheeled all ground connections, fuses, ammeter, etc.

Once I got the truck to start reliably again, moved over to tuning the carb. This is my first 4 cycle carb tuen, so it's taking me a while to learn (esp. when the truck wouldn't start....). This is a 1977 FJ-40 from Cali, so a lot of things, including desmog, are different, and hard to find info about.

Need to pick up some caps to close off the EGR tube and replace a janky cap on the air filter, but hoping those are the last two vac-related issues, and that I can get on to tuning the carb, and back on the road. Maybe in the next week or so.

There’s some super savvy smog folks on the regular 60 section who could most likely guide you. Similar enough info to a 40.

Are you talking the tube that enters the intake below the carb? Comes from the fan side? You can crimp it and weld it. Some have cut it and welded a coin over the hole. Various ways. Or simply buy a block off plate and be done w/ it altogether. They can be purchased w/ a 90 to attach the PCV hose if a 40 is setup the same. Your are desmogging right? If so there’s a pretty thorough 24 page pdf for desmogging a 60. It’s far less traumatic than the notorious million page desmog thread.
If you need help, lmk.

@swelltimes also if you are desmogging and it was a Cali truck w/ all its smog parts, save them. They are highly sought after and can fetch a nice return or simply be a welcomed gift.

Would someone be kind enough to chime in on this one? I'm trying to get her back together before the next round of thunderstorms hits. Thanks!

1. Does the black raised "ring" on the gasket go face down or face up in the lower thermostat housing?

2. Should the hole in the thermostat be positioned at dead center between the rear 2 mounting holes or at 1 or 2 O'clock? I see that for the 80 guys it should be at 12...but not sure if that carries over for the B engines.

The FSM doesn't seem to clarify (unless I'm missing it.)

Thanks in advance!

On my 2F (I’ve dealt w/ 2) I honestly never thought about lining it up a certain way. Definitely be sure you have the top o-ring on the tstat. Would seem that carries over for various types.
Hope you got an answer... weather has been atrocious here in CT too.

^ Thanks Never! For anyone who stumbles across this...I was instructed to put the o-ring side facing down. Everything has been leak-free so I suppose we're good to go!

The 2B thermostat doesn't use an o-ring on the top of the t-stat. Thanks though!
