Take a household staple and straighten one end and use it to push up through the port and push the throttle thing upward. Obviously gently reem around the top edge first to remove any staked bits. Mine was missing the spring so nothing was making it pop up until I tried that trick.

@NeverGiveUpYota, I used that staple trick on a couple of the tiny jets / holes in my carb today: such a great suggestion! I'm going to leave a bunch of staples out in my shop for similar tasks. Thanks again.

Sure thing. Glad it worked for you. This girls got a few tricks up her sleeve. This is another one.... ;)

I got my carb reassembled, and just need to go through the FSM and dial in the set screws before I reinstall and start tuning.

Pulled the valve cover, too, to check valve adjustments, and pull / replace the oil galley plug.

While doing that, I pulled the hose from the PCV, and noticed an obstruction. I thought it was gummed up oil / fuel, turns out it was a ball bearing.... WTF? This is a CA truck, so I'm thinking it had something to do with the de-smog?

That’s done on purpose. I’ve seen it mentioned a bunch through mud. Can’t rememver why.
A new valve is cheap. The gromet that keeps it snug is the bitch to get out of the J pipe in the side cover. Get it soft w/ maybe dawn soap first. If it drops down in you’ll have to pull the side cover which means pulling the distributor and the alternator and it’s bracket unless a 40 is arranged different than a 60.

Without knowledge or experience, looks like either the bearing fell from the the valve, or it is supposed to be able to roll in vac hose so that when fumes go through it acts as a one way check valve? ‍♂️ Other thread mentions carb cleaner until operable, assuming that’s to get out carbon deposits that are not allowing Ball (check valve?) to roll freely when fumes go back to reburn? I could be way way off.....

There's no way that this ball bearing would have been able to move freely in the hose, at any point. The bugger was in there!

Had a fun hour or so this afternoon playing w/ a borrowed brand new knuckle centering tool.
My passenger side shims weren’t too funky so I just cleaned them up and added as I’d removed. One thick and thin on top and one thick on bottom.
But when I pulled my driver side apart I had zero shims on top and three thick on bottom so I felt it was time to use the tool I had borrowed.
I had some help w/ reading the caliper... definitely a finesse so to speak.
Looks like my new measurements are far more typical. Not sure who tossed three thick on the bottom and thought that was good. When I looked at the seal prior to pulling it looked okay. After pulling the spring was hanging out tho that could have been from being pulled out. But the driver side was definitely sloppy/soupy when I took the free wheel hub off, nothing like the passenger side which wasn’t messy at all.

Oh yeah! Fun task while on the truck. Pops right out w/ w/ an eye hook threaded in if the easy out doesn’t do it (I see now... photos were loading way slow).
Also a rag in a zip tie works better than simply stuffing a rag in there too... just an FYI for anyone else who sees this in the local club. I did mine when I had the head off. Way way easier for this short chick.
Doing good sir, keep it up!

Anyone who needs can gladly use it. Or any of my tools for that matter. Just return them. Now where the heck did I put my cherry picker?!?!? . Busting Jay, But your ears will be ringing when I need it to move something.
