So - I've had my LC for a little over a week now. It came with some brand new Firestone Destination LE2 tires on it. Good for the highway, but will be terrible on the trail. I wish the previous owner put A/T tires on it! I'm looking over tire choices and have decided to go with 285/75/16 on my stock LC.

I priced out some tires - Duratrac would run about $1300 for 5 tires, BFG KO2 about $1k, and the Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 $775.

Any other tires I should be looking at? I'm very tempted by the Geolandar due to the price and the reviews look good on them. I'm not planning on doing any serious off roading yet - just want to explore some easy trails for a while and learn the ropes.

bfg ko2 - a safe bet - can't go wrong.
geoland a/t have weak sidewalls - prone to puncture.

I have the Cooper Discoverer RTX, they were a great price from Tire Kingdom (I think they're the only place that sells them). They're fine on the road, great in heavy rain, and handle deep sand and shallow mud with ease.

Everyone suggests the BFGs, I wanted those but I was looking so save some money, and these have been great for my purposes.

i just put the KO2s on my LC. as everyone says, they are fantastic. Im very happy with them

Keep an eye on Craigslist, you can save 1/2 the price getting them used, typically 80% life remaining. How I got my KO2's. Just check the tires manufacture date and look for cracks...

If you plan on wheeling, duratracs sidewalls are prone to puncture

Seeing as your from SLC, you'll probably be driving in snow. Personally I love my K02's in the snow! Never had an issue in the Buffalo winters here in NY. Very comfortable and quiet for at AT tire. I just took them on a 1400mi road trip to NC and back and very quiet on the highway.

sell the new tires and buy BFG KO. go to a couple of tire shops and ask them what you think they are worth. maybe the give you 400 bucks off BFG's...

I haven't wheeled nearly as much as many on here (so maybe I am just lucking out so far on sidewall punctures) but I have not had any issues with my Duratracs and they have been a great all around tire (road/snow/offroad)... I would definitely keep an eye out on craigslist though, can save some serious money

I went to the KO2s from Trail Grapplers. The BFG's are great on ice and have good road manners. The trails were much tougher and better off road in general. You say mild trails- the KO2 gets my vote. And you can find them anywhere in a pinch.

BFG ATs/KO2 have always been my go to tire no matter which cruiser I need them for. But, with the bad batch/center tread cracking issue at the time of my recent purchase for my 100, it pushed me to the S/T Maxx this go round.

I've enjoyed the S/T Maxx more than I thought I would, especially offroad.

Why would these show up on the used market only partly used up? Don't most people just run tires until they are worn out? I'd imagine finding good used ones with a lot of life would be rare. Not challenging you, just curious.

Just people changing tires, going with taller/wider tires or a different brand.

Not sure if they make them in the size you want but falken wildpeak at3w are also a good choice that will not break the bank.

I've got BFG AT's on a 45 and Duratracs on the 100 and the Duratracs out perform them in every way. It's not my first set of either.

I've also got BFG MTs on a 40 and they aren't great in the winter.

The Yokohama Geolander ATS is a real nice tire. Had them on a mid 70's power wagon and they were great in the snow, but perhaps it was the truck.

The same reason(s) any consumer product ends up on the used market.

I was able to find a set of 285/65/18 KO2s with less than 5k miles on them with these black tundra trd wheels for $700 on craigslist a month ago. The next day I sold the wheels (not the tires, just wheels) for $600, took the KO2s to Discount Tire and had them replaced under warranty due to the cracks ($200 prorated), and even had them agree to replace them with my preferred 275/70/18 size. All things considered, I spent roughly $300 on BRAND NEW 275/70/18 KO2s with full warranty.
