Plantar means bottom of the foot. The part of your foot that you plant on the ground. A wart anywhere else is not a plantar wart. Not your finger, not your ear, not your dog's ear, not your groin area.

However, if WOB doesn't change that avatar, we might have to plant something (like sand) up his hind end. :flipoff2:

I took a vet med entmology course last semester and if I had to make a guess I would say it's some type of bot fly larvae but the location isn't right or atleast not typical of what we discussed in class...

I am still working at the teaching hospital here, if I remember I will ask one of the vets this weekend if they have ever seen anything like that before.

You might want to put some triple antibiotic cream on it to prevent localized infection or atleast reduce the chances.

I highly doubt that it's a bot fly unless Eric's been vacationing (with dog in tow) in the tropics.

Might be "like", as in thicker than the skin on the back of yer hand/top of your foot. But it isn't plantar<(latin) plantaris<planta=sole of foot. 'Les, of course you walk on your hands. :D Then it would be correct. Warts on palm of hand are "palmar". :D :D

I think so also because it one of the few places on the skin where you don't have hair.

I'm glad somebody told me the skin on my hands is the same as the skin on my feet. My hands get raw after a good session, now I just have to figure out how to stretch my feet up there :flipoff2:

man that is nasty - why didn't you take him to a vet to get it removed?!

Ive seen far worse things growing on the dogs we had on the ranch. You people......

I bet all you use lotion every day to keep your hands soft and take bubble baths. Pansies. :D

If he starts acting wierd at all take him to a vet and take your unknown friend along. Probability is that if yours has it, so does someone elses. And if their reation to it was anything like the people on this boards they probably had six car wrecks on the way to the vet. If it bothers you or he seems sick take him in. If not its off now and probably harmless.

A Vet Students View

Sorry to bring this thread back guys BUUTTT...I've gotten a few PM's from people asking me to tell you what the fawk that is in Eric's dogs ear since I am "the vet-in-training" (thanks JMan :flipoff2: :D). I was hoping to avoid the subject because I didn't want you all to think I was a retard for not knowing what it is :). I showed the pictures to some other people in my class and a couple of the residents, and no one could really come up with a diagnosis. We all agreed that it is not an alien, or any other living creature. More than likely it is just abnormal proliferation of skin, probably caused by a papilloma virus (basically a funky wart). From the pictures, there appears to be a "stalk" that goes down into the superficial surface of the pinna, and then the "tentacles" are abnormal, rapidly growing epithelial tissue protruding from this stalk. If in fact this is what it is, more than likely it will grow back, since it was pulled out with a pair of pliers. Growths like this usually would require removal, and then cryotherapy (freezing) around the lesion to kill any remaining virus in the surrounding tissue that appears normal.

Eric, I would definitely keep an eye on your dog's ear, if you see any swelling, redness, abnormal discharge, or he begins to scratch at it a lot, I'd take him to your vet becaues he may have a secondary infection at the removal site which may require debridement and possibly topical therapy. If it comes back, I'd definitely go to the vet so they can remove and diagnose it for sure.

I know it's not the best explanation, but sometimes it is hard to diagnose things based on pictures alone...hope this helped a little...

HAH! They don't teach about aliens until you get to your fellowship year! :flipoff2:
