For the last 12+ years the 4x4 community comes together to help out with special needs kids. Diablo 4 Wheelers, Reno 4x4 and Hills Angels out of Reno and the 4x4 community come together to help transport kids with special needs in and out of Lake Hawley. The Nejedly family (They own Lake Hawley) sponsor this event along with the Contra Costa Youth Council and the City of Sacramento. We transport the kids into camp, they spend the week there and the next week-end they are brought out on Saturday. On Sunday another group of kids are taken in and the following Saturday they will be transported out.

Saturday July 23th, 2016
11:00 am - need to be there to check in.
Graeagle Community Church Parking Lot
150 Johnsville Rd.
Graeagle, California

If you can't help out this week-end let me know as there are other week-ends that need help with transportation, let me know.

July 30th .. arrive at Lake Hayley by 10:00 am to transport kids back to Graeagle.
July 31th .. help to transport kids into camp.
Aug 6 . . help to transport kids back to Graeagle.

We will be on Channel 4 on the CB's, 146.460 simplex on the Ham Radio.

1. The first week we always have the young kids, 8-12 years. There will be 21 kids plus their counselors who need transportation into Lake Hawley. For those transporting the kids into camp you need room for 2 people, one child and their counselor. We also have a great need for those who can just take in their gear and wheelchairs . . so trucks and 4x4 with trailers are also needed. We also always need help unloading the bus and putting gear into vehicles and trailers.

2. Please make sure you have carpeting or floor coverings on the floor board of your vehicle. There was an incident a couple of years ago where a child was placed into the rear of a vehicle without any covering and unfortunately the driver and her counselor did not notice that her shoes had slipped off and when she arrived into camp the bottom of her feet where blistered.

Bring your lunch, snacks and drinks. Also water and snacks to share with the kids. It is a 12 mile drive into the lake and takes about 2 hours or longer? Remember these are special needs children and we need to keep the speed down. Children ususally arrive around noon, we have to unload all of their gear and wheel chairs and pack into the vehicles and trailers. Mean while the kids have their lunch and their personal needs are dealt with.

Be prepared, some years we have not gotten back to the highway till around 7:00 due to children having problems on the trail or vehicle breakdowns. When leaving the camp some will head out to Gold Lake/Snake Lake/Little Deer Lake and other will return to town.

I have posted directions and a link below to the Church. Be sure and pack a lunch, drinks and a chair to sit in. We never know how long we may have to wait for the bus to arrive from Sacramento.

For those who have never been there below is a link showing the Club taking the kids in.

Super cool! Thanks for posting!!

I've heard of this event before and always thought it would be cool to participate. If my landcruiser was running I wouldn't hesitate to join in; unfortunately, I'll be bringing my daily driver 4runner this summer and it's not quite a trail rig. Perhaps next summer.

The trail from Graeagle via Johnsville to the A Tree to Hawley Lake is not a real challenge. Low range is all thats needed. Amazing, sweeping views. There are a number of stock pick ups we use to haul in the luggage, so if a bone stock truck is doable, anything is. From Hawley Lake, one may back track top the A Tree, or continue down Gold Valley and pop just north of Packer Saddle. Only Snake/Little Deer Lakes have the full awn challenges. All interested volunteers encouraged to consider the event. And u can be back to GL by mid/late afternoon.

We have shirts!

URAPrFI.jpg

@jcardona1 I love the look on your dog man,i know that a couple of those is mine.

Got my shirt yesterday. Looks awesome!

haha I slacked off and didn't get a shirt. If there's an Extra XL, and either a small/medium for my lady, i'll bring some cash to the event.

I have a extra, small shirt red

After our group delivers the special kids to hawley lake we will exit via gold lake, so if you see a desert tan CJ8 with matching pack mule trailer, come say hey and we'll crack a cold one. As a jeep guy I really enjoyed Rubithon couple weeks back-- but was in a FJ45LV to blend in, LOL. (got skunked in the raffle)

@renolaw Would love to have you at our camp if you drive by we have more than enough cold ones stash, CJ8 is a Scrambler right? I love old school Jeeps just not the Chrysler built. Maybe next year we could help you guys out and plan ahead and sounds like a great event too for the kids.

Yes, correct. Recall driving thru that tight squeeze and you were on foot on driver side of trail and reached for the camera as we drove past. Small world! We also had a good time running with the UA guys, even scoring some swag.

Good news the recreation technicians were incorrect on their information on little gold Lake. I was up there today for work and the sign says camping is allowed at little gold Lake. I will be contacting the wreck text tomorrow when I get back on my shift.

Late to the party on this and didn't read all 16 pages. Are there any open spots for camping left and what is the cost if there are? If there are spots left I'd be interested in helping with getting a kid to the camp as well on Saturday.
