Wow quick, somebody check his bib!

Bezel on the 1/79 and newer only fit one way. For earlier bezels I like the simple orientation for dummies.

Funnily enough, I had one in my LX, but I doubt I'll be able to find one for this one. I will add one if I can find one, but I'd really like to find the plastic cover and the plastic knob...... both now made of unobtainium. I had them on all my previous 40s, but that was decades ago now (which I'm struggling with comprehending).

When I think back to all the great Cruisers and parts I've had, sold, given away and lost.......oy, makes me nauseous.

On the other hand, tinkering with 40s is the automotive equivalent of comfort food for me. I'm a bit obsessive about it and it occupies way more of my brain space than it ought to..... but I love tinkering with them.

PRLC makes a repro of the cover, and the knob is readily available new OEM for about $8

Thanks Matt. Since you'll be digging into that handbrake when you have the Paki Pig, can we add the knob to the list please (and maybe the cover too, unless it's made of platinum) @cruisermatt ?

Got quite a bit done today, putting the Cruiser back together. Still waiting on a few parts. Hopefully, I'll have the roof back on by next week. I made the spacers for the windscreen bolts after cleaning up the mounting brackets: I've attached a picture of "Pakistani restored" vs correctly restored for giggles.

I painted the defroster vents because the originals were sun faded. But I discovered the the left one is broken and melted together (rather than glued, I guess because it's cheaper to melt stuff together rather than gluing it). So I'll need to find one of those when I'm back in Australia in July.

I spent about three or four hours cleaning silicon out of my rain gutter so I could put urethane in there. These guys really loved silicon; I'm SO sick of scraping silicon. The roof will eventually have to be repainted though because it is not cygnus white: more of an antique white. I'll polish it and see if I can live with it.

The Pakistani fun continues: after discovering them on another build here on Mud I bought the doorpins from @SMG fabrications (who, by the way, win my vote for the absolute coolest sticker which comes with the pins). The pins are really nicely machined and a joy to behold.

When I pulled my old door hinges off I realised that because labour is cheaper than the little Toyota neoprene bushings, they used some odd aftermarket bushing which looks like it came from a household door hinge. In order to get this odd after market bushing to fit, they drilled out the hinges.... rendering any form of factory repair moot.

Fortunately, I have about six pairs of very good hinges from Australian trucks I've parted out 15 or 20 years ago. So I'm going through those to find the best of all of them. Then I will put them together, sand them, paint them the same nardo grey colour which I had mixed up and then assemble them with the SMG pins.

The hinge I tested so far is beautifully smooth with the new pins.

I received the window channel from @Living in the Past. It is in amazing west coast condition. It is people like this that have made Mud what it is for the last twenty years. Thank you John.

@Chamba I have those @SMG pins and bushings installed on my ‘75 FJ40 and they are exceptional. My doors are spectacular and likely never fit as well from Japan when it was built.

Only home for a day between trips but I was able to get a couple things done. I finished stripping, priming and painting the hinges. I'll let them dry for about a week or so and then I'll put the doors back together with the new pins. I went through all six hinges and found the four best ones. The little copper bushings fit nicely in these hinges but on a few of them they were a bit loose.

I installed the window channel which John sent me and it is perfect; I will think of you every time I wind up and down the window John. Thank you again @Living in the Past.

While I was prepping and painting , I fixed one of my biggest pet peeves: the grill bib hinge not being body colour. This was playing on my O.C.D something fierce. Catastrophe averted.

It was no big deal. This is solely a hobby. Never about money. Every time I see your cruiser I'll know I have a piece in it's restoration. There is a early FJ40 in the museum in Utah I have a donated piece in as well.

I finally took apart something which actually had the correct bolts and didn't require sourcing correct bolts for reassembly! The passenger side hinges were actually never removed in the 'resto', so they had the correct bolts-yeah!! But it did mean I needed to clean up the metal underneath and paint it. Luckily, no rust.

I do wish I'd done this when the wiring harness was out though: would have made accessing the driver's side upper hinge MUCH easier. The driver side had been off unfortunately (why one side and not the other you ask? My guess is the boss could only see the driver side, so that's the side they cleaned up, though I wish they'd left them on so I wouldn't need to get MORE correct bolts) so each hinge was only held on by two bolts rather than four: all 13mm heads. 'Good enough' seems to be the motto in that part of the world.

Front seats are in. Very happy with them. I've been looking for a set of SR5 seats from a fourth generation 4Runner but i've finally given up.

One of the dads in my kids' school has a '67 Bronco, with these seats in it. I looked them over sat in them and measure them and realised that they would actually fit a 40 very well. They even offered them in a colour that nearly matches the door panels.I'm getting here on Mud. I added seat heaters and modified the brackets and they fit perfectly.

Very nice bolsters and good back support as well. I got them from Tom's Off Road in Oregon, which deals exclusively in Broncos. Upon looking at my friends Bronco I realised they have a similar issue to what we have with the need for a thin seat bottom for clearance. Overall, I think i'm very happy with the results. I've got the matching flip down rear seat as well.

I can't wait to get this thing into Cruiser Matt's and get it on the road.

I'd love to see the matching rear seat! Does it tumble forward too? My front seats are nice, but I have no clue what they're from. Currently looking for a rear seat. Was about to pull the trigger on the Bestop rear bench, but open to other ideas too.

EDIT: just looked up the seats on Tom's website, looks like their seat is the Bestop Trailmax II bench with the mounting brackets rotated 180 degrees and different colored vinyl.

According to them they are different seats. The front seats certainly are different, and they're much more comfortable and have a taller back than the best tops I had in my Scrambler. The seat botoms are also a little narrower, which will allow me to use an 8" wide Tuffy centre console rather than the six inch.

But I haven't pulled the rear seat out of the box yet: it does feel heavier than the seat that best top tumbler my Scrambler had.

I'll post a picture up when it's in. Eventually I'll recover the jump seats to match, but the tumble seat is an easy option for now.

These look great. I have been thinking about replacing my best top ones. Good to have another option.

As promised. I'll attach a shoulder belt to each roll bar C pillar when it's done. But for now I'll be putting lap belts in.

And in keeping with the all-show-no-go nature of the Paki Pig, I have installed the 8274-50 and the 8" Tuffy centre console. Sadly, disappointed that the mounting plate on the winch bumper is quite narrow. I will need to add about three inches of metal to it on the driver's side and about an inch on the passenger side.

Now I need to figure out where i'm going to put the seat heater dials as it's a bit tricky with the radio in the console. I'm thinking I will put them in the little interior tray and permanently attach it. That'll have the added benefit of keeping them out of the weather.

I also installed the foam kickvent weather stripping and rubber bumper. I was wrong about the stuff that they used: I thought it was floormat material but it was actually just styrofoam packing material like you would find wrapping a computer or a laptop. Quality Pakistani stuff.

A productive day overall. Hopefully roof back on tomorrow. And then I'll start buttoning it back up in hopes that @cruisermatt can get her into cruiser spa soon.

I like that console… I may have to get one for my 40. I have no real lockable storage when that top comes off
