Maybe I missed it, but what's special about this motor? Why go with this over a 4BD1T?

You did kind of miss it....but here is the skinny without any fluff. :D

Nothing is special about the motor in stock form. It is about the same as any Japanese inline-six turbo diesel from the 70s-90s. IE; indirect injection, very little electricals, fairly low stock boost, ect. I had it built for a Patrol that would be used specifically for rock crawling. A lot of the build on the motor was aimed at this kind of use, such as pickup in the valve cover and shaved sump. However, in the new truck I doubt these kind of mods will be put to the test. I threw a s*** load of cash at the SD33T and then the economy went down the drain. I am self employed. So it sat in Oz since 2010 when the build on it was completed. Now plans have changed and I don't want a trailer queen truck anymore. The motor is paid for, built, new, blinged out, modified and I just see no reason at all not to use it besides the fact that I am putting a Nissan diesel in a Cruiser. That is not enough of a reason for me to not use it. I mean come on, people are putting Isuzu diesels in Cruisers, Audi engines, Cummings, every form of v8 or even some v6's....why not a Nissan turbo and super charged diesel!? I can't recover near what I have in the motor by selling it and on top of this I save a lot of time by using it since it is built and ready to go. I also should add, it seems like a shame to me (and maybe a waste) to have a motor of this caliber in a truck (the trailer queen) that only gets driven say 6x a year on trips to Moab, Rubicon, Johnson Valley, ect. This motor is fully capable of 500,000 miles before it is toast and needs major work. Why not put that to use rather than put 1,500 miles on it a year!?

If I could easily get my hand on a 1980s 4-door Patrol I may just be building that instead. However, I plan for this motor to be the last thing I import, I am tired of importing. To get a 1980s Patrol 4-door I have to import it and in all honesty, I like the 60-series Cruisers more than the 1980s Patrols when it comes to comfort, interior, style, ect. On top of all this I have a super clean 88 FJ62 body sitting in my yard. The 94 FZJ80 frame is very very close to the 160-series Patrol in terms of width, ect. The 60-series Cruiser body is not that hard to plop on the 80-series chassis. The NV4500 mated to the SD33T and Atlas just makes sense. The portal axles are sick no matter how you look at it. It is just all making sense to me and coming together nicely. If I was starting from scratch on this project I would probably use the Cummins or a 12HT. I am not starting from scratch though on the build. And last bit, the SD33T is a very similar motor to the 12HT in terms of size, weight and power.

Questions answered! That's a badass motor and it will be perfect t in the engine bay of a Land Cruiser.

No worries and thanks! Maybe I should go back and edit page one so things are not confusing. ;)

And it should fit nicely but there will definitely be a few issues. The Patrol has a slightly larger opening in the rad support for the radiator. More then a 1/2" larger all the way around. On top of this the hood support is going to have to be modified because as you can see I have a big intercooler that will take up the space for the hood support. The radiator is a custom built unit, to match the stock Patrols in terms of size, mounting and so forth. That means it is not going to match up or just bolt in the Cruiser's radiator location. My external oil reservoir was built to suit the Patrol. As a result it fits perfect on the RHS inner fender at the firewall. However, the shape and size of this area in the Cruiser is not the same.

I would also like to run A/C but as it is now in the Patrol there is no room for it. In the Cruiser I may be able to squeeze it in there.

Nice build. A mate of mine had an MQ with an SD33 in it, couldn't kill it even in stock form. Turboed and blown, it'll be plenty powerful enough. And the 62 is a great choice over the MQ/MK wagon - they're fxxxin agricultural!

My new motor is in route!!

It has left Australia and is currently in Taiwan. It will land in Southern California on June 11th. I am currently dealing with all the import docs and so forth.

Stoked! :D

Well, this is the part of the build where I am working 24/7 to pay for the build!

Working on getting my new engine shipped up from Long Beach when it lands. I would like to go pick it up myself but won't have time with all the work I am buried in.

I would like to buy the rest of my suspension stuff soon. Coilovers, rear shocks and sway bars. I also need to buy my steering box. Hopefully all this work I am doing will pay off and I can buy this stuff before long.

Not much else to say, no time for the project right now, playing the waiting game.

I just lined up Odie (Mudship) to bring my 84 Patrol (new engine) up from Long Beach the weekend of the 15th. I will be picking up my brand spanking new engine the night of the 16th at a buddies house in Idaho.

I am super stoked!! :D

BTW, I don't think many of you can imagine how excited I am to see the new motor....ok maybe a few of you can imagine.

I had the engine built in 2008/09 and in about one week I finally lay eyes on it for the first time!! It has been a damn long road from conception to being in my hands but the day is close when I will see where all this time and money has gone. I am pretty g*d d*amn excited to say the least! Expect video and pictures of the new motor soon! :D

Right there with ya, better be some pictures! :D

geez, I'd run that engine in an instant, just to hear it purr. Thing looks pretty sweet, certainly must have a lot of time, money and effort tied up in it.

is the old rusty body around the nice new engine worth anything for you to sell over here?
