what catch my eye .. it's the fact Turbo got fresh air first .. then it goes to the top mounted IC then to the SC wich use the front huge IC then to he intake manifold .. that surprise me, .. I would do the SC first and using the small IC .. but I'm pretty sure your builder know much more than me here .. just wonder why ..

Ya, I honestly do not know why it is the configuration it is rather than another like you suggest. You know more than me David, so....

I do know it seems to work pretty damn well and so far I am very happy with it.

FYI, I got the idea for the S/C on the diesel from the builder. I was at his place in Australia in early 2008 and he had done a S/C on his TD 70-series Ute. I loved it! When he asked if I wanted something similar, I said hell yes! I had never seen a S/C on a diesel before that and besides mine his 70-series Ute is the only other TD with a S/C I have seen. I am sure some are out there I just haven't seen them.

It would be very interesting to see the results of a twin boost gauge setup(1 in the intake manifold and 1 in the turbo's wastegate actuator pipe) through the rev range :D

Looking ahead now that the engine is here....

Working my ass off all the time 6 days a week. I am self employed and have some debt to knock down with my business which sucks because it gets in the way of toys, aka this project. But all is good, s*** loads of work = money.

Really itching to buy my Saginaw box and the rest of my suspension. After that all I need is my trans & t-case and I am ready to build this truck, or at the least get the build going in a more serious state of things. I jumped the gun early on, wanting to chop the chassis and all that. Since this is to be my last build for some time I want to do it right once and have the flow of the build go smoothly. That means I need all my gear in hand before I go cutting and welding.

Besides my shocks and steering the trans & t-case are my next big purchases and my last high dollar items to buy. As mentioned before I have a 1977 Patrol Ute I am kind of planning to slap a bunch of junk under I have sitting around and then flip the Patrol which buys my tranny & t-case. I have almost everything I need for the 77 Patrol to build it and sell. It is just a matter of finding the time to do it! Oh and I also have at least one interested party in the 77 Patrol Ute before I even build it! So I doubt it is going to be hard to sell for what I want once it has built locked axles under it that are SOA, a brand new 5spd & t-case plus a new SS fuel cell and a diesel engine. All this crap I have sitting here ready to go into the Ute and all of it for me = a new NV4500, clutch + belhousing + ect and an Atlas t-case.

Any ways, enough blah'ing on....the engine is here, that hurdle is over. Next up is buy the rest of my suspension, steering and gear boxes. Then I am ready to assemble!

I took a ride in this thing yesterday, or better yet the shipping container and holy crap!! Thing sounds like a semi truck with a damn jet engine! Nice job on the motor build, should be more than enough to push the weight around.

Looking forward to the build up!

My pleasure brother, anytime you want to go for a ride I am game! Got to break this motor in somehow!! :D

I am sooooo itching to do something on my project. For me working on trucks is R&R and relaxing. Even when I am cussing at the truck! I got part of tomorrow off from work, going to try and at the least clean up my garage (if you could call it that) and make some more room indoors. I am still wanting to build a shelter to work in but may switch gears and knock down a pony wall in my storage space/garage area and see if I can't get it together to turn it into some kind of a shop. It is about 20x30ft, has plenty of nice shelving and so forth. Just need to knock the wall down, get some lighting, do something with the floor....blah blah blah. If I had a garage I would probably be out there right now rocking the loud music, drinking beers and working away!

A little bummed some cheap ass rattle can paint was used on the motor in a few places. Already have paint peel and flake on my water pump and head showing up. I paid something like $75 during the engine build that was supposed to be for quality engine paint. Little details like this really bug me so I am likely going to do some painting on the engine before it goes into the Mongrel. I also don't like the looks of my fuel rail, it appears to have not be re-coated like some of the other things on the motor, rather hit with black paint. I think I will send it off for new zinc coating. I am picky and other then this not much to complain about.

Last time I had the engine running (few days ago) I put my infrared thermometer on it in a bunch of locations. This was after a bit of a drive so it was warmed up, about a 5 miles drive. The friggin turbo was the hottest thing on the engine and iirc it was at 250-275f!! Oil cooler sits at 175, water outlet at 165-180 and at the 3" dump it was at least 10 degrees cooler than at the turbo. Pretty stoked on all this. Will take video next time showing temps on the infrared.

Plasma cutter showed up yesterday, bought an Everlast Supercut 50P. Looks like a pretty decent unit for $500. It will do up to 3/4" which is more then enough for me. Also got new parts for my pressure washer yesterday, gun, nozzles and few other bits. I like to work on a clean truck so this was key for me.

New IR 5hp 60gal compressor showing up tomorrow morning. This afternoon $300 in cut wheels and flap discs will be here.

I will still have to get some power work done here at my house, plasma and compressor are 230v. Also need better lighting in my shop area. I am good buddies with an electrician though so no worries.

About friggin' time!! I am nearly 6 months behind on where I want to be with the project but I simply couldn't move forward much without these tools. My impact wrenches, sanders, cut off tools and more have been sitting idle for nearly 3yrs. About time to put them back to use! Pretty stoked!

Bring it and feed us with lots of pics!

My plasma tec 40 is still going strong (its a cheapy plasma) and it has proved to be a great tool. The everlast is an even better tool... bet you'll love it! I'd love to get a bigger compressor that my little 30 gallon sears special..

The amp dial on the Everlast seems kind of cheesy but I haven't fired it up so don't know if I am just being picky. The Everlast definitely smelled like China when I opened the box!! Ha! However, I was going to buy a bottom end Hobart and after watching videos and reading some stuff on Pirate I went for the Everlast. I really only need the plasma for this project, after that it is just a nice tool to have around. And hey it was cheaper than the Hobart and came with a load of consumables. Hard to beat that for $500, shipping included. ;)

The compressor is sitting outside on a pallet. I had a cheapo before too, it lasted about 5yrs and then the motor seized up. A compressor is really key for me and makes so many things easy. I been due for a good one for a long time so I splurged and dropped a grand on this one. Should last me pretty much forever. I got impacts, sanders, paint guns and a nice filter set up (for painting) ready to go so I am super stoked and ready to use these tools again! :D

And thanks guys, the tools are motivation. I would much rather spend $1500+ on parts but without tools parts do me no good! I don't really need any more tools, maybe some tanks for my little mig Miller. Flux wire sucks! Looking forward to using the sand blaster I paid half for 6 months ago too. My buddy I went in on it with has used it a half dozen times now or more but I have yet to use it. Watching him use it I know it will serve me well for this (and other) projects. I just will have to rent a 185cfm compressor to run it. No biggie, $75 a day gets me that. I even have a few bags of Starblast sitting here along with a half dozen bags of pumice.

Now if I can just get my electrician buddy over here soon....yesterday he said he is two weeks out. And he doesn't drink much so can't bribe him. Sucky!

I rebuilt my pressure washer recently so hit the 80-series frame one last time. It is really (I mean really!) clean and I couldn't be happier about that.

In preparation of cutting on the 80 frame I wanted to plot everything out on it before doing any cutting. So I made a accurate to scale drawing on graph paper detailing the frame, ie cross members, body mounts and so forth. As soon as I have the 62 off it's frame I will do the same thing. My point of doing this is for body mount locations and just so I have it all recorded. I bought some RuffStuff shock towers about 6 months ago,

http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/STOWER12.html

and I was really curious how these may work out for my plans. So last weekend I dug them out and did a bunch of more measuring. From the top of the stock 80 axle to the top of the shock tower is about 27" with no weight on the suspension besides the frame. I plan to run pretty much stock height suspension in the rear and since the front is being built from scratch I don't want the truck to end up not being level. The frame is nearly perfectly level front to rear with the stock suspension in and only the weight of the frame on the springs. I know I can tune the rear with coil spacers and the front will be adjustable. Any ways, 27" looks nearly perfect for a 12" c/o. The 12" Kings I am looking at are 20.65" compressed and 32.65" extended. So 27" is right where I am wanting to be with my c/os. However, there will be dramas when it is time to fit it all. The RuffStuff towers give an approx 4" off set from the frame rail. The current shock mounts on the axles which is one of the best places to mount them on the axle is about 6" wider then the shock towers. Round abouts 38" spread for the shock towers and it is 44" on the axles. This means I have a 3" difference top to bottom over a 27" length on each side. Haven't bothered to calculate the angle of that! Sure would be easy to just move the mounts on the axle but there in lies the drama. Almost exactly in this area on the axles (37-43") is the flange to go from axle tube to portal drop box. I have got about a 6" area here on the axle where I really can't do anything or mount anything. And I am not interested in widening or narrowing the axles due to what that will cost.

I fully realize things are going to change a little here and there measurement wise with the portals under the frame and so on. However, since I am waiting on some other crap I figure why not play with numbers. The rear axle is going to be a snap, I could damn near bolt it in now as is! The front is not so easy. I am going to mount the front axle though pretty much where the stock is located, the rear is definitely not going to move. Since I am going with a new steering box without the conventional 80-series steering set up I can move the front axle forward pretty easy. It doesn't look like I need to do that though and the stock location is looking ideal. Panhard will be a bit tricky to set up but is fully doable. More checking on engine measurements too and it is looking like the diesel will sit pretty much where the stock engine sat in the 80-series frame. Width and length wise the SD33T is very similar to the 3FE it just has more height top to bottom. As far as I can tell right now that is the only drama I will have fitting the engine, how tall it is. Plenty of ways to play with the height of the engine in the chassis but my goals are little to no body lift and a flat belly.

Any ways, enough blah'ing on! My plans at this point are to have the work space set up before winter, 2 months from now. Have the axles out of the Patrol and the engine too. I would also like to pull the 62 body off it's frame. Then I am ready to work on setting the axles up under the 80 frame this winter and I can also start in on body mounts. I can also play with locating the engine in the frame rails. I should be able to purchase my steering box by this time too. Coilovers and rear shocks, highly unlikely since that is a nearly $3k purchase! And there is no way I will be able to drop the coin on my trans & t-case until I sell another truck. The plan of attack though is axles and suspension first. Then shorten wheelbase to approx 107" by hacking down the frame. Then set the body on the new chassis. Any other order is going to cause dramas and doesn't make sense.

I got the new compressor in it's location! Not much progress but something...this weekend I will run some wire for the compressor.

No time for the Mongrel right now because I am working on this....

https://forum.ih8mud.com/chit-chat/...top-frame-off-restotration-2.html#post7912675

Until I get that done I can't justify much if any time for the Mongrel.

Wow... Ian, looking at the amount of werk you putting on that Patrol....
I can only imagine what a great project you going to put out...... with the Mongrel....

Thanks Frank!!

I also got my W/E wheels with 37" rubber mounted up. I will never run bigger then this size tire on this truck so I want to build it using these. And hey, I only paid $50 each for the tires! Tires are 37 x 13.50 as seen on the rims.

So not exactly an update on the Mongrel but an update none the less and a move in the right direction...

Today was day #3 of working on the man cave! I have had this space for years now but it has always been cluttered, dirty and a mess. Up to now it was just a place to store my junk out of the weather.

The floor up to now was a disaster. This is an old horse stall so there was old horse crap, clay, rocks, compacted soil and old hay for the floor. It also was nowhere near level. It was also very dusty, I had sheets of plywood over it to try and cut down on the dust. We carved the floor off and down about 4", leveled it off and hauled the junk away, not a fun job! The floor now is crush but it is about 4" deep, maybe more, there is about 4yrds of crush on it. Every inch or so of crush we compacted the crap out of it and wet it down. It is not perfectly level but it is flat and very hard. I need that...

It is wet in the picture

I have been looking for a wood stove for awhile now since I got the idea in my head to convert this space to a workshop. A friend gave me this old Fisher stove, for free!

main.php

Durock on the wall for protection where the stove will sit. Made a 3ft square concrete pad with permanent steel frame. Mounted a stainless 4ft 24g sheet on the wall with 1 1/2" spacers off the wall for fire protection. Stove is not going to face out but rather sit along side the wall to save space. Where the compressor sits will be all my electrical, ie breaker panel, plug for plasma cutter, few 120v plugs and the starter for the compressor.

main.php

Shelves been in for a year and need to be organized, I have to much crap! There is a beer fridge tucked in there. ;)

main.php

Big sliding "barn" style doors on the right with enough room to move my junk in and out.

main.php

The other corner....and access to the house.

main.php

It is small but enclosed and I can heat it! To finish it off I need to install the stove, get the wiring/lighting done, do a few small shelves and fix up my work bench. I may also do some insulating. Usable space is about 12-14ft x 18ft. Just barely big enough for a chassis! :)

I hadn't planned on getting fire wood this fall but looks like I need 3-4 cords now, at the least! Been nearly 8yrs since I have done the firewood thing.

Cheers
