Man it looks good out and about! I like it almost as the one with the flatbed you parted out some years back. Man, I wanted that truck… Just couldn’t couldn’t swing it at the time.
Yeah, too bad one had to go to make this truck. This one is soo much better though!

Well I am having too much fun with this thing I guess. I received my first speeding ticket in however many years, I really can recall the last time. I accepted it with a smile, who would have thought I could get a speeding ticket in a Land Cruiser. I guess I need to pay a little more attention to my use of the throttle pedal. I had just pulled out of a parking lot after picking up pizza and overshot the limit in my attempt to get up to speed.

The officer was nice and told me he liked my Jeep. I let him know it was a Land Cruiser at which point he told he was going to cite me for speed.

Need a pic.

I was running down I-80 between Rock Springs and Green River, WY and had been making my brush guard at the College weld shop, so did not have my front plate out on the bumper. WYHP was headed east and saw that the plate was missing so he turned around and pulled me over. He asked if it was a Jeep or a Classic and had no idea what a Land Cruiser FJ40 was. Then asked were my front plate was. I did not get a ticket but got a deficiency card and had 2 weeks to get the plate back in place.

Many have doubts about the milk man🙄

I had attempted to use this Volvo evap filter as a breather for the tank and replace the evap canister. It didn’t work to prevent the fuel smell.

I wanted something smaller and after shopping around I found a refillable Vapor Trap. It is filled with carbon inside, has screen on each end, billet aluminum and seems very well built. You can get it polished or black and they come in 6 and 8 inch lengths if I remember correctly.

The fittings and clamp I bought separate. It is just barely too big to fit tucked up between the frame and tank. I may be able to push the tank over enough to fit it later but for the moment I mounted here to see how well it works. I ran the outlet up to the back of the fuel filler neck and added a breather.

I added a driver side mirror, so I can see behind me now. I also added weather stripping to the doors. Wow, it is so much quieter. It still develops a light whistle on pavement starting around 45mph, I am pretty sure it is coming from the upper corners of the door. I think I recall seeing some sort of gasket or trim piece that addresses this. I will have to research it again. I took it on some washboard dirt road and on a short trail ride, more enjoyable now.

Fall is here the leaves are changing color.

I have been trying to track down a noise from the drivetrain. There was a lot of trouble shooting before I figured it. I found a support brace under the transmission hump, that was in constant contact with the transmission shifter bracket. I could not see it from underneath but found the rub mark when I pulled the trans cover off. This contact was acting like a stethoscope on the transmission, so you could hear it in the cab.

After clearancing the bracket. The noise went away completely. I didn’t take pictures as I was just trying to get it back together and test it.

I figured I needed a little more clearance than what I got from trimming the bracket, so I pulled the transmission cross member off and had a 1/4 inch milled out of it so the transmission could drop down a little. Hope to paint and have it back together this weekend to confirm.

I was getting some contact between the tie rod and panhard bracket at full steer to one side or the other when compressed, so I swapped out my heim joints for offset heims. Gave me about an extra inch of clearance. I will find out if it was enough after I get it back out on the trail.

I have made a couple short trail runs to test transmission/body clearance and the tie rod/panhard bracket clearance. Nothing appears to be rubbing. I found another spot though where the panhard is touching the panhard bracket support bar on full compression, I knew this would be close and have a plan to adjust it.

I have noticed that the panhard bar has been contacting the frame on compression. I have been thinking through my options to prevent this. The bump stops are extended as fast as I feel is acceptable, so I decided to remove the panhard bracket I used to raise it up to get the draglink and panhard bar working in the same plane.

After removing it, the panhard has plenty of clearance but is no longer parallel to the draglink. I am concerned this could create some bump steer issues. The draglink runs at 1 degree incline from the passenger side to the driver while the panhard runs at 6 degrees, so there is a 5 degree difference.

My plan is to drive it and see how it handles. If it creates a new issue my next thought is to replace the cross over steering with a GM Y-link setup. If I run the Y-link under the arms it will get the panhard and drag link pretty close to parallel of each other.

On the upside by removing that panhard bracket I gained space for the steering. I should be able to adjust my steering stops and get a much better turning radius.

LOL, No but I can tell you are familiar with the area. The Pueblo LE don’t play around.
Man I sure love that area. Looked for property around there for a while, finally settled on a spot between Antonito and Chama.

I actually made it back over that way the weekend after I spoke to you and did my favorite little hike. I wanted to hike up to San Antonio hot spring but only had a couple of hours of daylight.

It is a good spot but buying up here is getting tough. That is one of my favorite short runs up hear.

Chama area is nice too. Let me know the next time you come through the area.

I took it out for a short night driving after work today. I ran it through a series of off road obstacles and eroded dirt tracks with some spirit. Off-road I could not tell a difference in the steering change. It handles nicely.

On pavement I ran it up to 65mph. No noticeable difference playing with the steering at speed. I cruised over a couple dips in the road at about 60mph. I may have felt the effects of bump steer but it was slight I may have just been feeling the suspension role from hitting the dip.

It feels good, so I will keep driving it as is unless I experience something else.
