Interior sheeting going up.

This surface will be painted after the battens are added. It will mimic the look of the Lil’ Cabin, pic for reference. All the trim/window trim work will be in cedar.

7 pages in and we finally get the priorities in order

Framing in the windows. Starting with the sliders. Casement windows are on deck. Time to start thinking about flooring.

I used 3/4” T/G in the main cabin. Considering engineered flooring for “The Hall”.

As of today, this thread is in the here and now. 🥳

Casement windows framed.✅ Placed an order yesterday for wood, picked it up at 0900 this AM. If our math holds up, we should have just enough to finish up the trim work. Late start but productive day.

The vinyl windows can distort and be a little tricky to shim sometimes. I like the use of the butt joint and calibrated eye for a rustic vibe..

Looks great to me. One day I'll begin my own journey to carve out a piece of heaven back in the woods. Sure am enjoying following along as you bring your vision to life for you and others to enjoy.

Thank you for following along. 🫡

Sometimes I feel like I took a circuitous route and got stuck on the roundabout. I get out there and I don’t want to come back.

Wall sconces in place. Tested with a random bulb. Probably going to use an Edison bulb on a rheostat for the final approach.

Ceiling fan coming up next. Going to go big IOT push some air around.

I know you’ll find this hard to believe, there may be a lane shift taking place..😆

Local superstitions and fire pit legends…

My “neihbor” down the road called me one afternoon out of the blue. “Chuck” is an old Vietnam Navy man. Sort of a no nonsense personality, direct and straightforward. Mrs Chuck is a horse person who rides all over the country. Our land connects and she rides on my property sometimes. She keeps an eye on the place. Anyway, he calls one day.

Chuck: “Can you see pictures on your phone”?

Me: “Sure, what’s up?

Chuck: “ I’m going to send you some pictures”

Me: “Sure, send em”.

These pics were taken <50 yds from the Meade Hall Porch. The story that came with the pics goes something like this:

Mrs Chuck was out riding one morning. Decided to take the shortcut home and used a short right of way that connects the two properties. A few yards into the ride her horse starts acting up, gets fidgety, starts balking then refuses to go any further.

Mrs Chuck dismounts, tethers the horse and starts looking for what she thinks will be a dead animal of some sort. She gets up toward what I call a “weep”. It’s really not a spring, but it stays wet for no good reason, other than it can. Winding up out of the hollow on her left is a game trail. Just across from the trail she finds the print in the mud.

Deciding the long way home wasn’t such a bad choice after all, she beats feet on a now willing horse to find Chuck.

Thinking his Mrs had run on to a large bear track, he agrees to investigate and grabs his tape measure. Arriving at the weep he snaps these pics and calls me.

Chuck: “what’d ya reckon made that print”

Me: “Nothing I’ve ever seen. Looks like the d@mn things got five toes! Don’t see any claw marks either”.

Chuck: “I stood next to it on one foot and barely made a dent in the mud” (see pic) (Chuck’s weighs in at about 200lbs)

Me: “What’s your Mrs think”?

Chuck “ She thinks she’s done riden’ for the day”.

I’m not making any claims as to the identity of the owner of that print. You can draw your own conclusions. But I will say, I’ve thought a great deal about it at 0530 walking through the persimmon grove in route to my stand. I also like to talk about it around the fire pit after the sun goes down. New hunters get a little less talkative after hearing the story and looking at the pictures. One or two have even decided that they prefer afternoon hunts over predawn treks through the woods. 🫤

Bird hunting is the perfect geezer past time. It’s slow paced, you can BS the entire time and someone else (the dog) does all the work. If you’re lucky enough not to drive, there’s usually a beverage provided at the end. What’s not to like!?

We had a little break in the action from the Meade Hall project. Decided to corral the guilty for some “fun with old men time”. OCB, CB and SOB out for an afternoons pheasant hunt. I’ve never hunted sorghum or switch grass (cover) quite that thick/high before.

CB’s 1st time out. Seemed quite enamored with the concept. The bulk of the work was done by OCB’s shorthair “Reese”. Very good dog with a keen nose and a firm deliberate point.

I think we’ll go back sometime after the new year. Give the cover time to lay down and not be so hateful.

My participation in pheasant hunting is almost always as the photographer…

That’s a great pic. 👍🏻 You can read the dogs demeanor.

Preventative medicine.

We capped the cross beam on the front porch to keep Mother Nature at bay. Looked like a potential nesting opportunity. Going to let all that treated wood season until next fall before staining.

Edison bulbs in the sconces? Brilliant! And we have a case of them.

I will report back

Looking good!!!

I would however caution you. When one man in the neighborhood starts upping the ante with a classy new remodel/build, the other gents on the block don’t look so good…so I’ve been told.

I like the way John Goodman’s character on Roseanne put it:

When one man remodels, all men suffer!

Well…

I mentioned this to the missus, but I wasn’t actually motivated enough to actually do it before her curiosity got the best of her. So off she went.

She shared a picture that looks identical to what I took with the LED bulbs, and all I have is her word that it is a different picture, with the Edison bulbs. She says they’re dimmer, which isn’t something she usually complains about. But she says they’re pretty hot, and she’s not sure that’s a good idea next to a wooden wall.
