Hmmm...any idea what might be causing that sound?

It doesn't sound like the engine knock on my rig...I blame mine on 'piston slap', but I really have no idea how to identify what the true cause is...but whatever it is it isn't as loud as the sound in the video you posted...I hope it's something simple/easily fixed...

I don't know exactly what it is yet, but Im calling a local shop tomorrow to see about getting it diagnosed. If I'm lucky its a bad exhaust leak or something with the smog pump; if its what I think it is... then its a lot worse...

I started to notice more ticking than usual last week but up until Saturday it was pretty quiet. I told myself last year after spending all summer fixing problems that if this truck broke down and spent another summer in a shop, I would be getting rid of it. ...that will probably be the case here.

It doesn't sound like an engine noise, removed the belts one by one to see if it is one of the accessories. Save your money for some serious issues, very possible an air pump or an alternator. When i bought my 60 it had a really bad noise come to find out the alternator is starting to lock up.

Viper, how could it be the alternator (learning opportunity). Machinist, I'll send flowers. I love your truck and what you've done with it. My Tonka truck looks up to it for guidance and inspiration. Hope yours gets better! Hope its just exhaust

^^^ It's just a possibility but unlikely, when i looked at my 60 prior to buying the alternator was about to lock up and it made a horrible noise sounding like gears are clashing inside the engine. Thanks to the mechanic that was looking into it he just told the owner it was the engine going out but my gut feeling tells me it was something else so i made a deal and got a nice running 60 after i replaced the alternator.

Seriously?! You are giving up the 60 for something more "economical". WTF is wrong with you!!! So what is on the purchase agenda?

What @gregnash said.

There was a lot of sarcasm in there. I know how bad it can be to have to commute long distances in a less than comfortable vehicle that gets crappy gas mileage. Of course, we will all be here to support you with pictures of our beloved cruisers and you are always welcome at the different events, always crappy to come to the logical understanding that something must go that you do not want too. It will work out the way it should...

oh yeah, and WELCOME TO ADULT LIFE!!!! LOL

I was there once and get the reasoning. Fair warning though, I ended up driving that stock T100 for nearly 15 years before I got nostalgic for lock out hubs and appreciation for the smell of old gear oil again. Sometimes life dictates, but the best things always come back around, they just cost a lot more! Your 60 has been a great example of functional, worthwhile mods as I bring mine back to everyday driver status. I enjoyed the chance to look it over and it's gonna be a nice rig for a new owner. Cheers to ya Darrell!

I won't be completely out of the game, (4x4's), but I won't be driving something that turns heads or gets random thumbs-up's for a few years. To answer you question about what I'm looking at to fill the void,.... 120 Series cruisers'... also known in the US as 4th gen. 4Runners. ALMOST as capable offroad as an old cruiser, with double the gas mileage, more comfortable, and much better suited for long highway trips. I figure the added mpg, comfort and "get in and go" of the newer truck will let me take trips more frequently.

Thanks, that means a lot! I'm not going to be having a good day when its future caretaker drives off with it, but mark my words; this won't be my last LandCruiser.

Oh, so sorry to hear that...
I've been buying and selling allot of rigs, and it's hard with cruisers.
But sometimes reason comes in the way of feelings...

I guess you have thought this trough, and you'll still going to have a capable rig.
Drove around in south Sweden with a 3door 120 on 33's, and it did pretty well.
Soon enough you'll start adding bits and pieces to the 120 anyway ;)

Keep us posted.

For the 4th Gen 4Runner I would take a couple for test drives. I have driven a few different SR5s and find that the seats are overly hard and can be uncomfortable but then again I am bigger, 6' tall and 190ish# with longer arms/torso. The inside is a bit more cramped than the newer 5th Gens. Oh and look for the 3.4L V6 not the 3.slow(3.0).

Take a look at the T100 and first gen Tundra too, can always throw a camper shell on those and be good to go!.

As for the incoming bad day... well yeah that is bound to happen. Maybe keep the new owners information and tell them that you may be interested in buying it back in 5 or 10yrs if they still have it.

dude, i know what you are going through with the sale. It sucks but there will be plenty of time to build cruisers later in life. I got a 04 Taco TRD Limited DC and it turned out to be a nice buy! They are expensive but it took me a month to find a good deal. its definitely not a neck breaker but still is cool.

Daryl,
Sorry to read you are letting go of your cruiser!
I understand what your going trough. If now is not a good time so be it. You can always come back to this madness. I left owning cruisers for the duration of my kids growing up. After they where in high school and out I dove back in the sickness.
It was great to always read your post and to have finally met you at Pismo!
I am sure you will find a nice toyota to fill your need and easy on the wallet. Keep us posted with what ever you purchase I am sure you will dive in like you did with your cruiser!
Good luck!

The 3.0 only came in the later first gen, and second gen 4runner, and the 3.4 only came in the 3rd gen. 4th gen 4runners are from 2003-2009 and came with either the 4.0 V6 or the 4.7 V8. They share many chassis and drivetrain components with the FJ Cruiser and second gen Tacoma.

I really like the T100's and first gen Tundra's, but I don't want/need a fullsize truck. Maybe someday in the future though....

I'td be pretty cool to track this truck down and buy it back a few years down the line! If I did that, there would be some BIG projects I'd like to do to it....

There were a few times in that last year or so that I almost pulled the trigger on a first gen taco, but in the end it always ended up being already sold or a little too expensive for what it was, (compared to what the same $$ could buy). If they weren't so expensive I would probably have one already, love the 1st gen double cabs!

Congrats dude... They definitely are great and capable trucks! Hopefully you will find a buyer soon because I am sure that wasn't and easy purchase.
